Workshops range from drawing, painting and ceramics to language courses and homeschool art, offering creative options for all ages

Holmes Center for the Arts is offering numerous classes this winter.
Guided Drawing (Shoe Study) with Diane Graebner will be held Saturday, Jan. 10 from 12:30-2 p.m., and it costs $15. It is open to teen-adult participants, with a limit of 15.
Graebner, whose work has been represented in galleries throughout the United States, will challenge artists to truly see what is in front of them. Materials will be provided, though attendees may wish to wear or bring an interesting shoe to capture on paper.
Landscape Painting with Graebner will be held Saturdays, Jan. 17, Feb. 14 and March 7 from 12:30-3 p.m., and the cost is $30 per workshop (sign up for one or all). It is open to age 16 and up, with a limit of 10 participants per class. Participants will create acrylic landscapes on 11-by-14-inch stretched canvas. Supplies will be provided, but students may bring their own paints and brushes if they wish.
Quilting for beginner or intermediate students with Pat Dutton is open to teen-adult participants and will be held Tuesdays, Feb. 17 and 24 and March 3, 10, 17 and 31 for $75. Class will meet Feb. 17 from 1-2 p.m. and the rest from 1-2:30 p.m.
This class for beginning or intermediate quilters will be tailored to individual interests and will cover using a simple pattern, hand and machine stitching, and creating a small, finished quilt such as a table runner or lap quilt. Students will be responsible for providing their own supplies and will need to bring their own sewing machine (except for the first class). A list of needed materials will be discussed in the first class.

Home School Art I — Elementary will be held Thursdays, Jan. 8 through Feb. 26 from 9:30-11 a.m. with Lisa Miller, and the cost is $132. Study the elements of art and apply them through creative processes with a variety of media.
Home School Art II — Elementary will be held Thursdays, March 5 through April 30 (no class March 26) from 9:30-11 a.m. with Miller, and the cost is $132. Study the elements of art and apply them through creative processes with a variety of media.
Home School Art I — Middle and High School will be held Thursdays, Jan. 8 through Feb. 26 from 9:30-11 a.m. with Cathie Lynch and Freda Graber, and the cost is $132. Students will continue to hone drawing and painting skills with an art-history focus with Lynch and will experiment with painting techniques with local artist Graber.
Home School Art II — Middle and High School will be held Thursdays, March 5 through April 30 (no class March 26) from 9:30-11 a.m. with Lynch and Emma Webb, and the cost is $132. Webb will teach the basics of digital art including how to navigate Procreate and effectively use layers on HCA’s iPad Pros. Students will focus on traditional drawing and painting skills with an art history component with Lynch.
Junk Journaling Workshop will be held Friday, Jan. 9 from 6-7:30 p.m. with Autumn Shaw. It is open to teen-adult participants, and the cost is $20. Attendees will learn how to make a simple layout, along with other collage techniques. Supplies will be provided, though attendees bringing their own junk is encouraged.
After-School Art for Elementary Students with Webb will be held Wednesdays, Jan. 14, 21 and 28 from 4-5 p.m., and the cost is $30. Learn a variety of media and techniques while practicing art in an encouraging environment.
Art for Teens and Adults with Webb will be Wednesdays, Jan. 14, 21 and 28 from 5:15-6:15 p.m., and the cost is $30. Explore a variety of art techniques in an encouraging environment.
Valentine Box Decorating Workshop for Home School Students will be held Fridays, Feb. 6 and 13 from 1:30-3:30 p.m. with Roxy Anderson, and the cost is $30, limited to 10 students. In this two-day workshop, students will design and decorate their boxes and deliver cards to one another. Attendees should bring a box and any specific supplies they want to use. There will be many trims and craft supplies available for use.
Sculptural Valentine Box Creation with Lydia Johnson will be held Monday, Jan. 19 from 9:30-11 a.m. The class size is limited to 15 students, and it is for children in kindergarten through sixth grade. The cost is $15. Bring a shoebox to decorate (already painted one color or covered with paper if possible). Trims will be provided, but if children have specific ideas, they are welcome to bring their own decorations.
Painting for Tweens and Teens with Ruthie Morehart will be held Monday, Jan. 19 from 1-2:30 p.m. The cost is $15.
Wheel-Throwing Ceramics with Eric Yoder will be held Mondays, Jan. 19 through March 2 from 6:30-8:30 p.m. for seven weeks. The cost is $160, plus a $40 supply fee. Attendees will learn how to use the potter’s wheel to make functional ceramic pieces or improve upon skills they already have. It is open to beginner through advanced levels, and Yoder will teach another seven-week session Mondays, April 6 through May 18 from 6:30-8:30 p.m. for $160, plus a $40 supply fee.

German Language will be held Mondays, Jan. 26 through March 2 from 6-7:15 p.m. with Rebecca Miller. The cost is $75 for the class and $18 for the book. It is a six-week course in basic German for beginners.
Spanish Language will be held Mondays, March 16, 23 and 30 and April 13, 20 and 27 from 5-6:15 p.m. with Colette Propri. The cost is $75 for the class and $18 for the book. It is a six-week course in basic Spanish for new or returning students.
Painting Fun with Freda will be held Mondays, Feb. 2, 9 and 23 from 4-5 p.m. with Graber. The cost is $40, and it is for age 9 and up. Attendees will create whimsical horses, flowers and other subjects of their choice using toothbrushes and their imagination. Canvas, acrylic paints and other supplies will be included.
Ceramic Jewelry Workshop with Liz Madison of Lizzie with Wings will be held Saturdays, Feb. 7 and 21 from 2-4 p.m. The cost is $50, and it is open to teen-adult participants. This two-part session will guide attendees in creating ceramic pendants, earrings and buttons. Attendees will play with shape and texture to craft a variety of personalized pieces for themselves or loved ones.
Whimsical Horse Paint Night will be held Friday, Feb. 20 from 6-7:30 p.m. with Graber. The cost is $25, and it is open to teen-adult participants. Create a whimsical horse painting on canvas using toothbrushes and acrylic paint. Supplies will be included.
After-School Art for Elementary Students will be held Wednesdays, Feb. 4-25 from 4-5 p.m. with Hershberger-Leinbach. It is for kindergarten through fifth grade and costs $40. Elementary-age students will work with various media to make collages, books and more.
Fabric and Embroidery Collage Class will be held Wednesdays, Feb. 4-25 from 5:15-6:15 p.m. with Hershberger-Leinbach. It is open to teens and adults and costs $50. Work with embroidery, needle felting and other embellishments to create fabric collage.
Watercolor Pets in Paint will be held Fridays, April 10, 17 and 24 and May 1 from 6-7:30 p.m. with Michelle Steffen. The cost is $60, and it is open to teens and adults, beginner or intermediate-level participants. Bring a photo of a single pet or several photos and watercolor paints. Pencil/paper will be provided.
Saturday Morning Cartooning with Dylan Olsen will be held Saturdays, Feb. 7 and 21, March 7 and 21, April 4 and 18, and May 2 and 16 from 9-10 a.m. It is for kids and teens and costs $13 per class. Learn the tricks of the cartooning trade with local artist Olsen. Each class will explore different characters.
Fabulous Fabric will be held Friday, Feb. 6 from 6-7:30 p.m. with Mary Gilmore. It is open to teen and adult participants and costs $25. Attendees will explore ways to alter and color fabric through printing, painting and dyeing.
Fun with Fabric will be held Saturday, March 14 from 1-2:30 p.m. with Gilmore. It is for age 9 and up and costs $25. Students will use painting, printing and dyeing techniques on fabric to create works of art. All materials will be provided.
