Carver to share his skills and collection
The public is invited to view wood carvings and watch a demonstration of the process by Robert W. Hawes at the Tuscarawas County Center for the Arts Saturday, Feb. 15 from 2-4 p.m. The center is located at 461 Robinson Drive SE in New Philadelphia.
Hawes, also known as Stumpy P. Boggs, is a hobby carver who has been engaged in carving for 80 years. He said he came from a time and place where you grew, hunted and made everything you needed.
He now resides in Dover at Park Village and is interested in sharing his collection and his knowledge of wood, tools and safety techniques. He has carved items as small as a half-inch basket from a peach pit to a 9-foot chainsawed grizzly bear.
In addition to the free demonstration, an exhibition of photography from the Focus Point juried show is on display in the main Foland Gallery, and artwork by Jon Stucky can be seen in the upper Members Gallery.
The event is sponsored by the Ohio Arts Council, The Pietro-Martinelli Charitable Trust, Troyer and Associates, and the Doris and Floyd Kimble Foundation.
