The E.D. Shumaker Pet Pantry was created to honor the life and legacy of Edward David “E.D.” Shumaker, Jr., a beloved teacher who impacted generations of families in the Harrison County community.
"Beyond the classroom, Shumaker was known for his quiet kindness and compassion," said Jodi Henry, principal officer at the American Animal Alliance. "Even in his later years, he faithfully cared for local feral cats. That spirit of service and care for both people and animals made it a natural fit to dedicate the pet pantry in his memory. We were honored to receive the blessing of the Amos family to do so."

It also will support individuals who care for community cats. "The goal is to help keep pets in the homes where they are loved and reduce the need for families to surrender animals because of short-term difficulties," said Henry.
The community can support the pantry through donations of pet food and supplies, as well as financial contributions through www.americananimalalliance.org. "We also encourage people to follow and share our Facebook page to help spread awareness," said Henry. "Every donation, large or small, helps us continue serving both people and animals in our community."
Organizers said they will work closely with the Humane Society of Harrison County, as well as local churches that already participate in monthly food pantries. While those relationships are being built, individuals in need can reach out through the Facebook page or website to request assistance. Organizers said they are working to make the process simple and respectful so those facing temporary hardship can receive support without added stress.
The American Animal Alliance is funded through community support. Donations from individuals, local partners and even those who grew up in the area but have since moved away help make the effort possible.
American Animal Alliance is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization formed in 2025 to support existing animal rescues in areas where they need additional help. Rather than housing animals directly, the organization works alongside local groups to provide resources, coordinate projects and help ease operational challenges.
Since launching in November 2025, American Animal Alliance has partnered with the Humane Society of Harrison County on several improvement projects and has offered extended support to neighboring counties, including assistance with feral cat shelters during the winter.
