What do you do when you have an innate, lifelong love of baking and a building becomes available in your area, equipped and ready to fire up the ovens? You see the opportunity, take a deep breath, dive in and start a new business. Linda Fisher, owner of Main Street Bakery in Scio, found herself in just that position in October, 2024, when the bakery was founded.

“I had worked at a bulk food store for some time so I knew a little about how such a business works,” said Fisher. “Then a building became available with all the appliances and equipment already there. It was ready to go. All we really had to do was go in and clean and get started. We talked to the owner and figured we could make it work. That’s when we decided to go for it.”

At that point, Fisher was a woman who already knew about baking. “I pretty much grew up with all of it from the start,” she said. “Growing up, we did all our own baking at home.” A stint working at a large local restaurant and bakery further honed her skills and knowledge. “Baking is certainly something you really have to love if you’re going to make it your job,” she said.

Main Street Bakery now offers a full slate of popular baked goods: breads, pies, cookies, doughnuts, cinnamon rolls, cream sticks and more. The list of available goodies has grown steadily since the business got underway. “We’ve only gotten bigger,” Fisher said. “Really much more than we initially figured on. I mean, of course you hope it will go well and grow but you never know. Now we have many more customers than when we started and they keep coming back. We also offer a greater variety of products and baked goods to our customers.”

Inside Main Street Bakery one can also find a deli, something that has also grown to bigger proportions since 2024. “We started with just some ham and cheeses,” Fisher said. “Just a few things. Now we have at least 12 meats and 14 varieties of cheese in the deli. The whole thing has really grown quite a bit.”

A key part of the business is supplying bakes goods to area restaurants and other businesses, sending out pies, cookies and many other sweet favorites throughout the area. They also welcome specially ordered cakes and pastries, including cakes for weddings. ”We do special orders and enjoy working with customers to provide them with what they are looking for.”

More people are helping out at the bakery now also, with friends and family making up the five member staff, just enough to lighten the load for everyone. “We are able to trade off so the same person isn’t always there early or staying late.”

The bakery pulls customers from a wide area, reaching Jewett-Scio, Cadiz, Bowerston, Hopedale, and with more than a few popping in from Carrollton.

“We’ve just been delighted with how things have gone and progressed,” said Fisher. “There have been few surprises, really, except good ones. We’ve been very happy at the number of customers we’ve had. They keep coming back and so business has been good and keeps getting better.”

Main Street Bakery is at 212 E. Main St., Scio. The phone number is 740-945-4014.
