It has long been said that the giving of flowers can reduce stress and improve mental health, acting as natural mood boosters that help lower cortisol levels. On Feb. 3, Audrianna’s Floral Designs brought that experience to Scio with the opening of its first brick-and-mortar shop.
The Harrison County Regional Chamber of Commerce assisted in welcoming the new floral design business to the village. With a population of 673 residents, according to the 2020 census, Scio now has a locally owned flower shop offering everyday arrangements and special-event florals.
Owner Audrianna Whiteman began her journey in floral design years before opening the shop. She operated a wedding floral business out of her home beginning in 2023, though her dream of owning a flower shop started much earlier. Whiteman studied floriculture at Buckeye Career Center, where she first developed her skills in floral arts. She later honed those skills while working at Enchanted Acres and has spent 18 years in the floral industry.
“I fell in love with making flower arrangements during my junior year of high school when I attended Buckeye Career Center for floriculture,” Whiteman said. “I remember so many of us talking about how we would love to own our own shop one day. I never thought it would actually happen, but the dream was always with me.”
Whiteman said she worked with flowers periodically over the years before becoming more deeply involved in wedding florals in 2018, helping her close friend Celeste Cybulski design and set up weddings at two venues. She became a full-time assistant in 2022, a year that brought a high volume of weddings.
In November 2022, Cybulski decided to step away from floral work and encouraged Whiteman to start her own business, passing along previously booked weddings. Cybulski died in March 2023, just one week before Whiteman’s first weddings on her own.
“It was an extremely sad and stressful time,” Whiteman said. “My younger sister, Anayla Sluka, helped me with all of the weddings I had booked. We did 64 weddings from March through December that first year.”
Since then, the business has completed about 180 weddings. Whiteman said she has since reduced the number of weddings taken each year to allow more family time, while still continuing her passion for event florals.
Last year, Whiteman decided Scio needed an everyday flower shop in addition to wedding services.
“I wanted to be more involved in my village,” she said. “When I saw this building was available on Main Street, I knew the size and location would be perfect.”
She credited building owner Dan Citro for helping her envision the space and make it her own.
Whiteman said the business travels throughout Ohio and Pennsylvania for weddings, typically within a two-hour radius, and she has additional help during busy periods.
“I am very passionate about what I do,” she said. “I put a lot of love and care into each arrangement I create. I am so excited for this new adventure and look forward to many years of providing beautiful arrangements for my community.”
Customers can place orders by calling or texting 330-663-6087, messaging Audrianna’s Floral Designs on Facebook or Instagram, or stopping by the shop in person.
Harrison County Regional Chamber of Commerce Executive Director Milo Baker, Chairman of the Board Nan Mattern, President Joyce Klingler and Vice President Brittany Mattern attended the opening to welcome Whiteman and her business.
“Scio is a neat village with diverse businesses and shops,” Baker said. “Now it has a beautiful flower shop where all floral needs can be met. We encourage the community to patronize this business.”
