Why do you call yourself a Christian?

Why do you call yourself a Christian, if in fact you do? Some claim the title “Christian” because it may be culturally acceptable. Some because it may be how they were raised. Some because they have some or little knowledge of what a Christian is. Some because they attend, or are a member of, a church or because they simply recognize Resurrection Sunday and Christmas. Some because they offer a prayer once in a while or ask for prayer when they are in a tight spot or in the midst of a tragedy.

Some, in fact, do claim the title “Christian.” A lot of people do in Carroll County. And if you asked most people in Carroll County if they are a Christian, they would say they are because of the above reasons.

The Bible says in James 2:19, “You believe that God is one; you do well. Even the demons believe — and shudder!” Demons believe the Bible in totality, and yet they will spend eternity in God’s wrath. It is not enough that you have a head knowledge about Jesus Christ or that you endlessly try to please God with good deeds, penance and religious works to gain his favor, or that you think of him once in a while and hope those things are enough.

Really look at 1 Corinthians 15:3-4: “[3] For I delivered to you as of first importance what I also received: that Christ died for our sins in accordance with the Scriptures, [4] that he was buried, that he was raised on the third day in accordance with the Scriptures.”

Christ did it all. He took your place to die on a cross and rose from the dead for your sins so that when you come to him in repentance and faith, asking him to forgive you, he will. And when that happens, you will have been born again to a new life that wants to please Christ and live the Christian life. There will be no questioning whether you are or aren’t, and you won’t be ashamed of Jesus.

So, why do you call yourself a Christian? Whether you have been totally ignorant of Jesus, playing games with God or simply have been well-meaning but not trusting in Christ and his work and merit alone, run to Jesus in faith now. He will receive you.

John 6:37 says, “All that the Father gives Me (Jesus) will come to Me, and whoever comes to Me I will never cast out.”
