Wooster Music Club features local musicians, plans ‘A Christmas Carol’ reading Dec. 2

November meeting at Wooster United Methodist Church showcased diverse performances ahead of holiday event open to the public

The Wooster Music Club met Nov. 4 in the Wooster United Methodist Church’s Wesley Hall. Co-President Kathy Helmuth welcomed members and guests.

The program began with Eric Fairhurst (alto saxophone) and Myra Leeper (piano) performing Eugene Brazza’s “Scaramouche” and Modest Mussorgsky’s “The Old Castle.” Mussorgsky’s composition was part of his “Pictures from an Exhibition.” Fairhurst gave a short history of the saxophone, stating the instrument first appeared in 1948.

Meg Litteral (violin) and Laura Tappen (vocal and guitar) presented the following songs by various composers:

—"First Light in the Mountains," Robin Bullock, 1998.

—"Rainbow Connection," Paul Williams/Kenneth Ascher, 1979.

—"Fine Spring Day Waltz," Meg Litteral, 2025.

—"The Conventional Reel," Olcan Masterson, 1977, Ireland.

—"Bless the Telephone," Labi Siffre, 1971, England.

—"Medicine Bow," Peter Ostroushko, 2000.

Louie Miller closed the program, reading the "Haudenosaunee Thanksgiving Address" and "Greetings to the Natural World."

The Wooster Music Club meets the first Tuesday of the month at 6:30 p.m. from September through May, except for January and February, at Wesley Hall in the Wooster United Methodist Church. Guests are welcome.

On Dec. 2 the music club invites the public to attend a dramatic reading of Charles Dickens’ “A Christmas Carol” by actor Richard Figge. The event will be held at Wooster United Methodist Church, 243 N. Market St. Admission is free. Doors will open at 6:15 p.m. Members of the Music Club will provide welcoming music at 6:30 p.m. The presentation will begin at 7 p.m.
