Wooster AAUW supports nursing students
Scholarships help four Wayne County women pursue registered nurse programs
The Wooster Branch of the American Association of University Women recently awarded annual scholarships to four Wayne County women who have returned to school to pursue further education.
This year’s recipients are Erika Weaver of Wooster, Melissa McElroy of Wooster, Christa Hatfield of Shreve and Cynthia Figel of Rittman. Hatfield also received a scholarship from Wooster AAUW last year.
Each recipient has completed licensed practical nurse certification and plans to continue her nursing studies in a registered nurse program.
Hatfield, Weaver and Figel will study in the Diploma RN Program at Wayne County Schools Career Center. Successful completion of the program leads to eligibility to take the NCLEX-RN exam, the registered nurse licensing exam.
McElroy will pursue an associate degree in nursing through Stark State College’s LPN to RN Bridge Program. Upon completion of the program, she also will be eligible to take the NCLEX-RN exam.
Both the Wayne County Schools Career Center and Stark State programs are nonbachelor’s degree programs.
Founded in 1881, the American Association of University Women is a nonpartisan, nonprofit organization that advocates for fair pay and equal opportunities for women and girls. As part of that effort, the Wooster Branch provides scholarships to women whose post-secondary education has been interrupted.
To raise money for the scholarships, Wooster AAUW holds an annual book sale in partnership with the Kiwanis Club of Wooster. This year’s sale is scheduled for Sept. 23-27 at the Wayne County Fairgrounds. Admission is free, except for the $10 preview night Sept. 23.
