Wayne County WIC program to continue uninterrupted through November

Despite the federal shutdown, health officials confirm services and benefits for local mothers, infants and children will remain fully operational this month.

Despite the shutdown of the federal government, Wayne County Health Commissioner Nick Cascarelli announced the WIC program housed in the Wayne County Health Department will operate as usual for November. The Wayne County Health Department received word from the Ohio Department of Health that the program could continue as usual.

“For November there will be no changes to the program," Cascarelli said. "We encourage people who are on the program to use the benefits and continue to make appointments to receive benefits and for those who may be eligible to apply. However, we do not know what will happen in December if a resolution does not come to pass in D.C.”

The Wayne County WIC program serves over a thousand mothers, pregnant women and children each month, all of whom rely on the program for access to nutritious food, breastfeeding support, infant formula, nutrition education and health care referrals.

Nearly half of all infants born in the U.S. benefit from the WIC program, which is funded through the USDA, Food and Nutrition Service. WIC is more than providing food benefits. WIC offers nutrition education, breastfeeding support and referral services.
