Orrville Public Library offers summer reading fun

Readers can join challenges, clubs and hands-on programs

Orrville Public Library will offer summer programs for children, teens and adults including book clubs, dinosaur-themed activities, reading challenges and StoryWalk updates.

Orrville Public Library will offer a variety of summer programs for adults, teens and children including book discussions, building activities, dinosaur-themed events, reading challenges and StoryWalk updates.

The formal meeting of Orrville Public Library’s Adult Book Club has taken the summer off, but there are still plenty of books to be read. Adults may stop by at 10 a.m. or 6:30 p.m. June 11 to share what they have been reading. Participants also will discuss new releases and review an author. No registration is needed.

Children in kindergarten though sixth grade are invited to Orrville Public Library for Brick Builders, where they can use their imagination and the library’s LEGOs for themed building activities. There also will be time to build their own creations. The three-part series will be held at 4 p.m. June 25, July 2 and July 9.

Registration is required and will begin June 11. Registration can be completed by clicking the event on the library’s website calendar at www.orrville.lib.oh.us or by calling the children’s department at 330-683-1065. One registration registers participants for the whole series.

The library will have numerous stations set up on the front lawn and sidewalk for Dinosaur Dig Day for children up to age 12. Families may stop by from 10:30 a.m. to noon June 13. The rain date is June 20. No registration is needed for this free program.

Middle school readers are invited to the library’s Youth Book Club meeting at 4 p.m. June 18. This month readers can choose any graphic novel. Registration will begin June 4 and can be completed by clicking the event in the library’s website calendar or by calling the children’s department.

Children age 2-5 are invited to the library’s Preschool Play Lab from 1:30-4:30 p.m. June 3 and 17. The library offers a variety of stations with hands-on activities that will help with large and fine motor skills, early literacy, and general brain building. Families may stop by the children’s department any time during the program. Older and younger siblings are welcome. No registration is needed.

Following the library’s dinosaur Summer Reading Program theme, children in kindergarten through sixth grade are invited to create their own dinosaur using recycled materials during Recycle-a-saurus at 10:30 a.m. June 26. Supplies will be provided, but participants may bring some of their own. Registration for this free program will begin June 12 on the library’s website calendar or by calling the children’s department.

During the first week of June, “How Do Dinosaurs Go to School?” by Jane Yolen will be added to the library’s StoryWalk. This month’s sponsor is the Orrville Exchange Club. The StoryWalk is located east of the dog park and is accessible from the Rails to Trails bike path and walking trail. Visitors can view a new book each month along the trail.

Students in fifth grade through eighth grade can earn a coupon for a special treat by reading for 20 minutes a day until they reach 300 minutes. The library’s Summer Brain Freeze Challenge will run from June 1 through Aug. 31. Students may pick up a log sheet at the information desk to keep track of their reading progress. When they complete 300 minutes, they may return the log sheet and draw from the prize jar. All summer entries will be eligible for a chance to win a grand prize. The books read also count for the Summer Reading Program and the 100 Books Before Graduation program.

Mystery lovers age 19 and over are invited to the library’s Summer Sleuths gathering at 6 p.m. June 22. Participants will talk about the books they read, have an interactive mystery and prepare for the fall Mystery Monday program series. No registration is needed. For the June meeting, participants may choose to read “June Bug,” “Knee High by the 4th of July” or “August Moon” by Jess Lourey. Books will be available near the information desk.
