The Ohio Library Council recently announced Barry Romich, president of the Romich Foundation, is the recipient of the 2025 Local Library Champion Award. This honor recognizes individuals who demonstrate exceptional commitment to enhancing public libraries and expanding access to resources and opportunities for all Ohioans.
Through his support and advocacy, Romich has helped libraries in Wayne County and beyond, demonstrating a commitment to innovation, inclusion and lifelong learning.
From equipping libraries with 3D printers, laser engravers and circulating tech kits to funding training and collaborating directly with library staff, Romich has empowered public libraries in Wayne County to embrace emerging technologies and create makerspaces.
His impact doesn’t stop at equipment. He reinvested philanthropic award funds to build a Maker Cart for his local library, kickstarting a wave of STEAM programming that continues to engage learners of all ages.
Perhaps most notably, Romich’s commitment to community inclusion is reflected in the creation of the Joyful Café, a coffee shop inside the Wayne County Public Library in Wooster that provides employment for adults with developmental disabilities. This partnership has elevated libraries, not just as centers of knowledge, but also as community-driven spaces for people of all abilities and backgrounds.
Romich will be formally recognized during a special ceremony on Nov. 19 at the Huntington Convention Center in Cleveland as part of the OLC’s Convention and Expo.
