Ribbon-cutting celebrates new health-focused additions at Orr Park
Grant-funded project brings fresh opportunities for active living and community engagement in Orrville.
A ribbon-cutting ceremony on Sept. 18 marked the official unveiling of the newest additions to Orr Park, located behind the dog park. These improvements are the result of a collaborative effort between the Creating Healthy Communities Team, Orrville City Council members and the work of the city service department.
The project was made possible through a grant from the Ohio Department of Health's Creating Healthy Communities program. Awarded to the Wayne County Health Department, the grant enabled the county to implement initiatives aimed at promoting active living and healthy eating. Efforts began in October 2024, led by grant coordinator Elesa Eaken, who used a variety of tools to assess local needs and identify communities poised to benefit from the funds.
“From the start we reached out to the mayor, city council, area businesses, service groups and residents to build a team focused on improving the community’s health,” Eaken said. “It’s been a rewarding process, and seeing this vision become a reality is truly exciting. I’m grateful for the opportunity to work with Orrville, and I look forward to continuing our efforts for a healthier community.”
The CHCT has been meeting regularly since November 2024, developing and executing plans to enhance Orrville's public spaces. The new park additions are expected to serve as a catalyst for increased physical activity and community engagement, benefiting residents for years to come.
The ribbon-cutting ceremony was attended by local officials and project partners coming together to celebrate the successful completion of this initiative.
