Observed every Dec. 1 since 1988, World AIDS Day continues the tradition of raising awareness about HIV/AIDS and honoring those affected by the epidemic. Human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) is a virus that weakens a person’s immune system by destroying important cells that fight infection. If HIV is not treated, it can lead to acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS). Today, nearly 1.2 million people are estimated to be living with HIV, and approximately 14% of them don’t know it.
Over the past 40 years, medical research has made a lot of progress—especially in treating and preventing HIV. But World AIDS Day reminds us that we still have work to do. To stop new infections and make sure everyone with HIV can get the care they need, people around the world must work together to end the epidemic.
According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), everyone between the ages of 13 and 64 should get tested for HIV at least once. If you are pregnant or planning to become pregnant, get tested as soon as possible to protect your baby.
Although there is no cure for HIV, it can be controlled with proper medical care. Medications are available for individuals who test positive so they can continue to live a long, productive life.
