Six Medina High School seniors earn honors in 2025 National Merit Scholarship Program
Evan Browne and Alexa Prifti named semifinalists; Mason Cooper, Hudson Karas, Paul Tomasheski, and Louis Strong recognized as commended students for top PSAT performance
Medina High School announced that seniors Evan Browne and Alexa Prifti have been named semifinalists in the 2025 National Merit Scholarship Program.
The distinction is awarded to about 16,000 of the nation’s top high school seniors, who now have the opportunity to compete for more than 6,800 National Merit Scholarships worth over $26 million. To advance to finalist status, semifinalists must meet several requirements set by the National Merit Scholarship Corporation. Historically, about 95% of semifinalists become finalists, and roughly half of those earn scholarships and the title of National Merit Scholar.
In addition, Medina High School recognized Mason Cooper, Hudson Karas, Paul Tomasheski, and Louis Strong as commended students in the 2025 program. Of the 1.3 million juniors who take the PSAT/NMSQT each year, about 34,000 top scorers receive Letters of Commendation, placing them among the top 3–4% of test takers nationally.
"Congratulations to all six students for their outstanding academic achievements and dedication to excellence," the district said in a statement.
