Medina’s Christmas Tree Lighting to shine despite Grinch’s sabotage attempt

Main Street Medina says Nov. 21 ceremony — the final tree lighting led by Mayor Hanwell — will go on as planned, with extra “cheerful surveillance” after the Grinch vows mischief.

Main Street Medina will hold its 41st annual Christmas tree lighting Nov. 21, promising holiday cheer despite the Grinch’s playful attempts to disrupt the celebration.

Main Street Medina and the City of Medina are excited to announce the 41st annual Christmas Tree Lighting Ceremony, set for Nov. 21 at 7 p.m. at the Gazebo on Medina Square. This beloved seasonal tradition will once again bring families, neighbors and visitors together for an evening of holiday magic, community spirit and festive celebration. As a kickoff to the holiday season, the Candlelight Walk has become a time-honored tradition. This year’s lighting will be especially meaningful, as it will mark the final time Mayor Dennis Hanwell lights the tree after 16 years of service.

But this year, there’s a twist.

Earlier this week, Main Street Medina became aware of a suspicious video circulating online — reportedly posted to what the culprit calls “the dark villain web.” The video features none other than the Grinch, who claims to have devised a plan to “ruin Christmas” and sabotage the town’s tree lighting. The video can be viewed on Main Street Medina’s website, Facebook page or Instagram page.

“While we appreciate the Grinch’s… enthusiasm,” Mayor Hanwell said, “the show will go on. Our community is stronger than any holiday grumpiness, and we’re ready to kick off the season with joy, laughter and just a little mischief.”

Despite the Grinch’s threats to unplug the Christmas tree, event organizers assure the public that all lights, wires, cords and festive electrical components are under careful — though cheerful — surveillance.

The event is free and open to the public, and attendees are encouraged to arrive early for the best viewing spots. Families are invited to bring cameras, dress warmly and bring their holiday cheer.

“We want everyone to know that Christmas cannot be unplugged,” said Angela Mansier, events director for Main Street Medina. “We hope the community will gather with us to light the square, celebrate together and show the Grinch that joy always wins.”

Following the tree lighting — and the Grinch’s heart growing three sizes — the Grinch will begrudgingly host a meet-and-greet on Broadway Street from 7:15 to 9 p.m. to benefit A Licursi Creations Christmas Story.
