Medina High School Student Council members recently participated in the 73rd annual Ohio Association of Student Leaders (OASL) State Conference, held March 6-7 at Belpre High School. The conference, themed “Take Flight,” focused on leadership as a transformational process, much like a butterfly’s journey of growth and change. Since 1953, students from across Ohio have gathered at the annual conference to exchange ideas, develop leadership skills and explore ways student councils can make a positive difference in their schools and communities.
A total of 17 Medina High School Student Council members attended the conference, along with more than 150 student leaders and advisers from across the state. Medina High School student council adviser Laura Calaiacovo accompanied the students. During the conference, Leah Bugner was elected to the student board, while Calaiacovo is serving in the second year of her two-year term as an adult board member.
Prior to the conference, Medina students visited Discovery World in Parkersburg, West Virginia, where they received a behind-the-scenes tour of the facility and learned about its development and mission. The visit provided a unique learning experience and an opportunity for students to explore leadership and innovation outside of the conference setting.
Five Medina students were selected to serve as conference staff members, helping facilitate small-group leadership workshops for their peers. Autumn Campbell and Kaitlyn Suliks led a session titled “Make Gratitude Your New Attitude.” Brinley Hair, Ava Kanieski and Nonsi Malusalila presented a workshop focused on constructive criticism, helping fellow student leaders develop communication and leadership skills.
The conference also featured keynote speaker Judson Laipply, who spoke about leadership in schools and the importance of adapting to change. Laipply emphasized that life is constantly evolving and that a leader’s response and attitude play a significant role in shaping outcomes. He also highlighted the importance of thoughtful decision-making for student leaders.
Medina High School Student Council received several honors during the conference. The council earned the Five-Star Council Award, recognizing schools that participate in OASL leadership training to help develop student leaders. The group also received the Army of Volunteers Award, which recognizes outstanding service to others. The mission of the award states, “In striving to build a generation, we will aid our community to aid us all.” In addition, Medina High School was recognized for 66 years of membership in the Ohio Association of Student Councils.
Several Medina students were also recognized through the Ohio Association of Student Councils Outstanding Leader Recognition Program, which honors students who consistently go above and beyond expectations through leadership, service and dedication to their student council. This year’s honorees included seniors Avery Henry and Brinley Hair, along with juniors Nonsi Malusalila and Brady Vein.
Additionally, Zander Helfrich concluded his term as president of the OASL student board and was awarded the OASL Ambassador Award. Helfrich earned this recognition by actively participating in OASL events throughout the year and applying leadership skills to promote the organization and its ideals at Medina High School.
The conference experience and recognition highlight the Medina High School Student Council’s continued commitment to leadership development, service and making a meaningful impact within the school and the wider community.
