Individuals interested in learning how to skateboard will have the opportunity to be introduced to the activity when the Medina Community Recreation Center hosts its first annual “Let’s Skate Medina: Intro to Skateboarding” workshop at Reagan Skate Park from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Sept. 21.
Visitors will enjoy professional skateboarding demonstrations, beginner lessons, food trucks and music from a local DJ, among other activities.
Recreation center activities coordinator Nevada Vujas said the inspiration for the event came from the skating interests of her three sons.
“As a mom of three boys who have showed some interest in skateboarding, it always seemed intimidating to show up at the skate park with no experience,” she said. “So I thought planning an event that included beginners would be a great way to open the park up for anyone interested in learning more about the sport.”
Reagan Skate Park originally opened in the early 2000s and was renovated last year. Vujas said she finds the venue to be a great place for children to meet, get exercise and have fun.
“As a resident of Medina, I have always loved exploring our parks with my kids, and as an employee of the city and the rec center, this also seemed like a great way to showcase the skate park, offer education about skateboarding and plan a fun day for the community to share,” she said.
Tucked away in Reagan Park, 855 Weymouth Road, the skate park offers a quiet atmosphere in a setting that provides some privacy. The venue includes a quarter pipe, a half pipe, a grind rail, a bank ramp and ample room to ride.
Vujas said “Let’s Skate Medina” will serve as an opportunity for skateboarding enthusiasts of all ages to explore the sport.
“We have partnered with Advocare Skate Works to provide a safe and supportive environment for guests to try riding a skateboard or simply have a fun day out with family,” she said. “Our goal for this event is to bring people together, provide opportunity for learning, growth, fun and to show that skating is a healthy, creative and constructive activity.”
