For Medina's Andrew Talbert, Halloween is more than just a night of costumes and candy — it’s a way to bring the community together and raise money for a good cause.
The 21-year-old has spent years transforming his family's front yard at 5855 Northampton Drive into one of the area’s largest Halloween displays, complete with lights, animatronics and handmade props. What started when he was six years old with a three-foot inflatable ghost has grown into a display featuring more than 30 animatronic figures.
Talbert said he began using his display to raise money for local animal charities several years ago. This year, donations will again benefit the Medina County SPCA.
“The donations keep growing every year,” Talbert said. “So far, we’ve raised nearly $1,000 in total, and now that we have Venmo, I think that will help even more.”
Talbert’s display includes a donation box and a QR code for online contributions. He said his favorite part is seeing neighbors come together on Halloween night.
“The best part last year was when a little kid left a thank-you note and some change in my mailbox,” he said. “That meant a lot.”
A member of the Cleveland Haunt Club, Talbert believes his display is likely the largest in the area. This year’s setup includes new features such as a clown ticket booth and his favorite animatronic, “Terrifier,” based on one of his favorite horror movies.
Talbert often travels to find new decorations — even driving seven hours to Egg Harbor, New Jersey, to attend the Spirit Halloween flagship store’s grand opening.
Talbert’s Halloween display is open to the public through Oct. 31 at 5855 Northampton Drive in Medina Township. Donations to support the Medina County SPCA can be made in person or through Venmo at the display.
