It will soon be time to think about upcoming holidays and designing gingerbread houses. The Medina County Historical Society has two events to help get you started.

On Sept. 13 at 1 p.m., the society will host a presentation titled “Power Tools and Gingerbread” in Root Candle’s Bee Culture Conference Room, located inside its retail store at 640 W. Liberty St., Medina.

National Gingerbread Competition winners Cheryl and Bill Filion will talk about their experiences with gingerbread competitions. Judging by the title, the use of power tools could be involved.

Parking for the event is available across West Liberty Street, next to and behind the Root tan brick building. For more information, email the Historical Society at mchs@zoominternet.net or call 330-722-1341.

With skills learned at the presentation, attendees should be ready to enter the Medina County Historical Society’s 3rd Annual Gingerbread House Contest.

The competition is open to all ages. It will include categories for children 8 and younger, youth ages 9-17, and adults 18 and older. The public will judge the creations on overall appearance and originality/creativity. A $50 prize will be awarded to the winner in each age group.

Completed application forms must be received at the John Smart House Museum by Sept. 30. Gingerbread houses must be delivered to the museum between 10 a.m. and noon on Saturday, Oct. 25, and picked up during the same hours on Saturday, Dec. 13. The houses will be on display, and votes will be collected, during museum hours.

For rules, applications and questions, email the Medina County Historical Society at mchs@zoominternet.net or call 330-722-1341.
