MCBDD provides free Roth ID Tags and Blue Envelopes for safety

Resources aim to improve communication and protect residents with developmental differences during emergencies

The Medina County Board of Developmental Disabilities is providing free Roth ID Tags and Blue Envelopes to help people with developmental differences safely communicate vital information to first responders during emergencies.

The Medina County Board of Developmental Disabilities (MCBDD) is offering free Roth ID Tags and Blue Envelope safety resources to Medina County residents as part of its commitment to fostering a safer, more inclusive community for people with developmental differences and their families.

“We believe that safety and dignity should be accessible to everyone, which is why we are excited to bring these safety resources to our community,” said Stacey Maleckar, superintendent of the Medina County Board of DD. “They help reduce fear and confusion in high-stress situations, both for the individual and for first responders.”

The Roth ID Tag is a voluntary tag designed to be attached to car seats, wheelchairs or other durable equipment. Tags may be customized with information such as a person’s name, emergency contacts, diagnoses, allergies, communication challenges and hearing or speech limitations. This information can be lifesaving when a person with a disability is unable to communicate on their own.

The Blue Envelope is designed to help drivers and passengers with developmental, cognitive and communication disabilities navigate traffic stops more safely. The envelope can hold documents such as a driver’s license, registration and insurance, along with personalized tips and instructions to help officers communicate effectively during the stop.

Both resources come with a window sticker to alert first responders to look for the Roth ID Tag or Blue Envelope for critical emergency information. The tools are suitable for both children and adults and provide responders with immediate access to vital details during a crisis.

“These small yet powerful tools make a big difference in helping people with developmental differences,” Maleckar said. “They help improve communication and promote positive interactions with first responders. They are a step forward in making our community more inclusive and helping people with disabilities be understood and supported at critical times.”
