Fire department warns of ice dangers after Valley City drowning

Officials urge residents to stay off frozen ponds and waterways, reminding the public that no ice is ever considered safe.

The Valley City Fire Department responded to a fatal pond rescue and is urging residents to stay off ice and call 911 in emergencies.

On Jan. 2, the Valley City Fire Department responded to a water emergency involving a reported drowning in a local pond.

At approximately 2:13 p.m., crews arrived on scene and removed an adult male from the water within five minutes. Emergency medical care was immediately initiated, and the patient was transported to Southwest Brunswick Emergency Room. Despite extensive lifesaving efforts, the patient could not be resuscitated.

The Valley City Fire Department was assisted by the Brunswick Hills Fire Department and the Medina County Sheriff’s Office. The Medina County All Hazards Water Rescue Team was also en route to provide additional support.

“Our thoughts are with the family and loved ones during this difficult time,” Fire Chief Andy Baillis said. “We appreciate the cooperation and assistance of all responding agencies.”

As winter conditions continue, the Valley City Fire Department is reminding residents to stay off frozen ponds, lakes and waterways. Officials stressed that no ice is safe ice, as conditions can change rapidly and ice thickness can be unpredictable. Residents are urged not to attempt rescues if a person or pet falls through the ice and to call 911 immediately so trained responders can assist.
