United Way offering free tax filing

United Way offers online and in-person tax assistance for eligible residents this season

United Way of Knox County is offering free tax filing options this season through MyFreeTaxes.com, a partnership with United Way and the IRS.

Households with incomes under $89,000 can file their federal and state taxes online for free at MyFreeTaxes.com using step-by-step guidance. The service guides eligible filers through their returns, so they can claim valuable credits such as the Child Tax Credit and Earned Income Tax Credit.

United Way’s calendar for individual tax appointments filled up quickly this year. To make services available to more people, we are introducing a drop-off service.

Clients needing in-person help can attend Tax Walk-In Days on March 5, March 12, and March 19 from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. at 305 E. High Street, Mount Vernon. No appointment is required.

Before you come, make sure we can help. Walk-in services are available to individuals who live, work, or learn in Knox County and meet income limits of under $65,000 for single filers or under $95,000 for married couples filing jointly. The program can assist with most basic tax returns but cannot prepare returns that include rental income, property sales, real estate transactions, agricultural income, clergy income, or certain 1099-MISC or 1099-NEC income requiring a Schedule C.

Participants must bring a government-issued photo ID, Social Security cards for all household members, direct deposit information, and all tax documents such as W-2s and 1099s. Incomplete documentation cannot be accepted.

The United Way of Knox County is committed to strengthening financial stability and helping individuals and families build a stronger financial future.
