Mount Vernon's Primm shines in Div. I district bowling tournament
Freshman shoots 639 to finish seventh overall
The jitters of bowling in a first big time high school tournament may have been there, but Mount Vernon freshman Andrew Primm just pushed them aside.
Primm just missed qualifying for state after firing a 639 series in the Div. I central district bowling tournament on Tuesday at HP Lanes in Columbus.
The series, with games of 218-227-194, put Primm in seventh place individually, and was just 30 pins from securing a spot at the state tournament. The top three teams and three individuals qualified for state competition.
Primm’s score helped his MV boys’ bowling team finish 13th as a team on the day. MV shot 3,645 in the three individual games and six Baker games to place 13th overall.
Senior Griffin Beach worked through some first-game struggles to finish 33rd individually. He had four splits in the first game, rolling a 158, but bounced back with games of 227 and 191.
Cooper Ferguson also had a solid day, finishing 58th overall with a 529 series (164-164-201). Bryce Hollenback had games of 134-163 and James Coburn had games of 144-150 for the Jackets.
Three Mount Vernon girls also participated in the district tournament as individuals. Junior Haylie Watts had the best day of the trio, firing games of 165-147-150 for a 462 series. That put her in 40th place overall individually.
“I could have done better,” Watts said. “I’m just happy with how I’ve done this season. I feel like I did a lot better than I had been.
“Finally making it to districts felt really nice. I was just happy that I got to spend the last day of bowling possible with Addy (Dusenberry).”
Junior Elena Culletto finished 57th with a 423 series (134-144-145), while senior Addyson Dusenberry finished out her high school career with a 415 series (123-138-154).
“I had a rough day, but I had a lot of fun with the girls. It was my last chance with them, and I had a lot of fun,” Dusenberry said. “I made it work. I was just hoping to get further and make it to state.”
The boys’ team and three girls advanced to district after doing well in sectionals on Feb. 18-21.
The Yellow Jackets finished 13th as a team in the Div. I sectional tournament at HP Lanes in Columbus on Feb. 18, placing high enough to advance to district competition. MV shot 3,644 as a team to advance.
Andrew Primm led the Jackets with a 575 series (176-235-164) and was 39th overall individually. Griffin Beach shot 565 (173-223-169) to place 43rd, while Cooper Ferguson was 62nd with a 538 series (216-152-170) and Bryce Hollenback shot 496 (176-150-170).
The girls’ team placed 19th overall as a team with a 2,781-pinfall count. They just missed moving on as a team, but three individuals were able to advance.
Addyson Dusenberry shot 478 (123-176-179) to finish 32nd individually and move on. Elena Culletto was 37th with a 467 series (139-174-154) and Haylie Watts shot 447 (148-182-117).
