Mount Vernon baseball hits way to two wins

Two huge innings helped the Mount Vernon baseball team knock
off North Union, 13-10, on May 14.
The Yellow Jackets scored seven in the third and five in the
fifth en route to the victory.
Nolan Hershberger led the Jackets offensively, smacking four
singles and driving in four runs. Greyson Deem added a triple and a single,
while Dammon Wolfe and Zack Beck each had two singles. Gavin Gorsuch doubled,
and Jax McPeek and Travis Burak both singled.
Coen Armstrong started on the mound for MV, striking out
five in three innings. Cooper Waers finished up, fanning five.
Hershberger continued his offensive explosion on May 15,
driving in five runs to lead the Jackets to a 14-4 victory over Cardington.
Hershberger had two singles to drive in those runs. McPeek
and Wolfe each had three singles with McPeek also driving in three. Beck had a
double and a single, while Burak and Deem both singled.
Wolfe pitched all five innings for MV, striking out seven.
The Jackets managed just two hits in an 11-1 loss to
Jonathan Alder on Monday.
Waers and Deem each singled for MV.
Hershberger threw the first four innings for the Jackets
with Beck finishing up and fanning two.
Softball
The Mount Vernon softball team brought out the big bats in
its tournament opener.
The Jackets slugged 13 hits, including six for extra bases,
in an 18-1 victory over Franklin Heights in the Div. II district semifinals
Tuesday.
Hailey Rudrick slugged a home run and a double, driving in
five runners to lead MV. Miranda Oswalt had a home run, double and a single with
two RBI, while Maddy Peterson smacked a triple and Paisley Platt a double.
Layla Joyner and Morgan Statler had two hits each, and Mea Joyner and Jocelyn
Scarbury had one apiece.
Oswalt pitched the first 3.2 innings for MV, striking out
five. Scarbury finished up, fanning three.
The Jackets will take on Teays Valley, the No. 2 seed, in
the district finals on Saturday at 11 a.m. at Olentangy High School.
