MV's McFarlane finishes 16th in Div. I state diving competition

Collin McFarlane made it through prelims, semis and then finals, finishing 16th overall in the state in the boys’ Div. I diving championships, held Tuesday at Canton’s C.T. Branin Natatorium.

McFarlane finished prelims with 196.55, putting him in 12th place and moved him the to the semifinal round. There, he scored 294.35 points, and advanced to the finals.

In the finals, McFarlane finished with 390.95 points, good enough for 16th place overall as an individual.

The Div. I district swim meet was held on Feb. 21, with three Mount Vernon boys’ relay teams eligible to compete.

The 400-yard freestyle relay team of Matthew Sant, Dax Sabo, Case Sabo and McFarlane finished 18th overall in a time of 3:35.27.

The 200 medley relay team also finished 18th overall. The team of McFarlane, Sebastian Thorne, Dax Sabo and Owen Cook finished in a time of 1:49.57. The 200 free relay team was disqualified.

Girls’ wrestling

The Mount Vernon girls’ wrestling team geared up for tournament play by finishing 16th in the Pin-Down Showdown at Delaware Hayes on Feb. 21.

The Yellow Jackets scored 51 points on the day. Hayes won its own title with 219.5 points.

Ashlynn Brokaw added another medal to her collecting, winning the 110-pound weight class with ease. The junior won her first two matches by pin (1:31 and 4:03), then beat Emma Gorrell of Warren, 10-2, in the championship match.

Evelyn Martinez (115 pounds) and Alivia Zimmerman (145) both had solid days, just missing a chance for a top five finish. Martinez won two matches by pin (0:49 and 0:37) while Zimmerman also had two pins on the day (0:55 and 1:44).

Mahayley Laverick (130) also had two pins on the day (3:23 and 2:52), and Joy Morman (170) had one (2:36).

Boys’ basketball

Mount Vernon was tripped up by Zanesville, 55-46, on Feb. 20.

Trace Beck led the Yellow Jackets with 19 points and eight rebounds. Trenton Wells added 13 points and four rebounds, while Landon Dawson had nine points and seven rebounds.
