The Salvation Army marked a significant milestone on Sunday, Jan. 18, with its Light the Day Dedication Day, a celebration honoring the completion of the newly renovated Corps Community Center, now known as The Learning Lighthouse. The event brought together Salvation Army leaders, local officials, community partners, and residents to recognize the impact the center will have on families and individuals throughout the community.
Dedication Day focused on the purpose and mission behind The Learning Lighthouse, which has been transformed to better serve the educational, spiritual, and social needs of the community. The renovated facility represents a renewed commitment by The Salvation Army to provide hope, opportunity, and support for those who rely on its services.
A highlight of the day was the ribbon-cutting ceremony, held in the afternoon in partnership with the local Chamber of Commerce. Prior to the ceremony, the Salvation Army Corps band provided pre-ceremony music, creating a welcoming and celebratory atmosphere for those in attendance.
The ceremony officially opened with a dedication prayer led by John Booth, chairman of the Salvation Army Advisory Board. Booth’s prayer emphasized gratitude for the many individuals and organizations who contributed to the renovation project and asked for continued guidance as the center begins its next chapter of service.
Lt. Colonel David Davis, Assistant Chief Secretary, traveled from New York to participate in the dedication. During his remarks, he shared greetings from the Territorial Commander and offered words of celebration and encouragement. Davis highlighted the importance of the Learning Lighthouse as a place of growth, learning, and compassion, noting that the center stands as a testament to what can be accomplished through collaboration and shared vision.
The city’s support was formally recognized when Mayor Matt Starr presented a proclamation from the city, officially dedicating the day as “Salvation Army Day.” In his remarks, Starr praised The Salvation Army for its longstanding service to the community and emphasized that the true impact of the organization extends beyond the walls of the building. “It’s not the building that makes a difference, you do,” Starr said, acknowledging the staff, volunteers, and supporters who carry out the mission of The Salvation Army every day.
The ribbon cutting itself was attended by a wide range of supporters and partners, including divisional leaders, advisory board members, campaign leadership, Corps officers and local officers, construction company personnel, City dignitaries, the project architect, owner’s representative, Chamber of Commerce representatives, and numerous community members. Their presence reflected the broad base of support that made the renovation of The Learning Lighthouse possible.
Following the ribbon cutting, attendees had the opportunity to tour the updated facility and see firsthand the improvements designed to enhance programming and services. The renovated space is intended to serve as a beacon for learning, care, and community engagement.
During the day’s events, Captain Christine Moretz shared an important announcement regarding one of the center’s upcoming services. She confirmed that the all-day daycare program housed within The Learning Lighthouse will officially open on Monday, Jan. 26. The daycare is expected to be a vital resource for working families, offering a safe, nurturing, and educational environment for children.
The Salvation Army Light the Day Dedication Day was both a celebration of accomplishment and a reaffirmation of purpose. As The Learning Lighthouse opens its doors, it stands ready to serve as a place where lives are shaped, families are supported, and the light of hope continues to shine throughout the community.
