West Holmes football shuts out Madison in OCC clash

Knights’ balanced attack, stifling defense highlight strong week across multiple sports.

The West Holmes football team rolled to a 35-0 win over Madison in Ohio Cardinal Conference football action on Sept. 19.

Brody Bowman rushed for 206 yards and a touchdown on 15 carries to lead the Knights (4-1, 2-0). Lynn Cline rushed for a score and caught a 46-yard touchdown pass, Reid Hoxworth caught a touchdown pass, and Brayden Parsons finished 7-of-12 passing for 96 yards and two touchdowns.

WH’s defense has allowed 13 total points in its last three games. Leading the unit against the Rams (2-3, 1-1) were Chris Williams with 19 tackles and a defensive touchdown, Coi Beachy with 16 tackles, Braxton Blake with 15 tackles, Cline with 11 tackles, and Zach Hustack with nine tackles.

Girls golf

West Holmes finished second at the Division I Eagle Sticks Sectional, advancing to districts as a team.

Aubrey Burchfield finished third individually with an 82 to lead WH. Sophie Robb tied for fourth with an 83 while Mattie Shankel tied for 10th with an 87.

West Holmes finished third at the final OCC tournament on Sept. 18, securing a second-place overall conference finish for the year.

Earning All-OCC first-team honors were Robb, Shankel and Burchfield.

Girls cross country

West Holmes competed at the Malone Invitational on Sept. 20, finishing third out of 15 teams in the big-school division with 116 points.

The Lady Knights were paced by individual runner-up Iriel Mena, who ran a time of 18:53. Katherine Kaster finished sixth in 19:53 while Alexis Wagers placed 21st.

Girls soccer

West Holmes rolled to a 6-0 nonleague win over River View on Sept. 22.

Charli Murphy led WH with four goals and an assist. Her fourth goal of the evening marked her 100th career high school goal.

Bri Poventud and Breslyn Brown each added a goal. Goalkeepers Landrie Croskey and Saige Krownapple combined for the shutout, with Croskey recording three saves and Krownapple adding two.

West Holmes picked up a 4-0 nonconference victory over Orrville on Sept. 20.

Charli Murphy paced the Lady Knights with three goals while Codi Murphy scored once. Goalkeeper Lilli Brown made 12 saves to secure the shutout.

Madison defeated West Holmes 2-1 in an OCC clash on Sept. 18.

Boys golf

West Holmes competed at the Div. II River Greens Sectional on Sept. 22.

Logan Allison (87) and Keston McKinney (91) led the Knights.

West Holmes finished seventh at the OCC Tournament #3 on Sept. 18.

Allison earned All-OCC honorable mention accolades for his play during the three tournaments.

Boys cross country

West Holmes competed at the Malone Invitational on Sept. 20, finishing 11th out of 15 teams in the big-school division.

Owen Neville finished 30th in 17:35 and Owen Mallasch 43rd in 18:10 to pace the Knights.

Boys soccer

West Holmes defeated Marion Harding 2-0 in nonleague play on Sept. 20.

Oliver Hiller and Garrett Obrst scored once to lead WH. Blayne Miller had an assist.

Jimmy Wengerd played a defensive gem from the libero position, helping WH’s defense pitch the shutout. Jordan Gerber ended with eight saves in goal.

Volleyball

Madison defeated West Holmes 25-21, 25-16, 25-16 in an OCC clash on Sept. 23.

Mallory Marmet (nine kills, three blocks), Lena Burgett (seven assists) and Harper Warner (11 digs) paced WH.

Eighth grade football

New Philadelphia defeated West Holmes 38-22 on Sept. 17.

WH’s Easton Clark connected on touchdown passes to Cameron Badger and Weston Rogers. Badger also had a touchdown run and a two-point conversion run. Joey Camacho had a blocked punt.

Seventh grade football

New Philadelphia beat West Holmes 52-16 on Sept. 17.

WH’s Zaylin McVay rushed for a touchdown and caught a touchdown pass from Christian Small.
