West Holmes football drops first OCC game in 41–7 loss to Lexington

Knights’ offense held in check as girls golf finishes fourth at district, cross-country and soccer teams turn in strong showings across Holmes County competitions

West Holmes and Lexington entered their week seven football matchup unbeaten in Ohio Cardinal Conference play. The Minutemen (6-1, 3-0) made a big statement, rolling to a 41-7 win on Oct. 7.

Brayden Parsons completed 13-of-27 passes for 200 yards and a touchdown with an interception for the Knights (5-2, 3-1). Brody Bowman rushed for 69 yards on 14 carries and caught three passes for 42 yards. Rhett Chaney caught four passes for 65 yards and a touchdown while Lynn Cline caught two for 42.

Coi Beachy led the defense with 12 tackles. Braxton Blake had 10 tackles while Chance Jackson had seven.

Girls golf

West Holmes shot a 404 to finish fourth at the Division I Lancaster District on Oct. 2.

The Lady Knights were led by Mattie Shankel, who placed seventh individually with an 87. Aubrey Burchfield shot a 101, Sophie Robb a 106 and Payton Hudson a 110.

Boys soccer

West Holmes rolled to an 8-0 nonleague win over Shenandoah on Oct. 4.

Garrett Obrst scored three goals and assisted on another to lead the Knights.

Ethan Ramseyer, Blayne Miller, Jimmy Wengerd and Jacob Galbraith (assist) all scored once. Oliver Hiller had two assists.

Girls cross country

West Holmes finished second out of 13 teams at the Wayne/Holmes Invitational on Oct 4.

Iriel Mena finished as the individual runner-up, running a personal-record time of 18:44. Katherine Kaster tied her personal record with a 19:47 to finish eighth. Alexis Wagers finished 11th in a season-best time of 20:11. Sophie Arnold finished 32nd in 22:41, and Ellie Babitt finished 34th in 22:45.

Boys cross country

West Holmes finished eighth out of 14 teams at the Wayne/Holmes Invitational on Oct 4.

Owen Neville led the Knights with a 13th-place finish in 17:06. Owen Mallasch finished 26th in 18:05. Parker Garver in 51st, Remy Beachy in 58th and Marshall Yoder in 62nd rounded out the scoring.

Volleyball

Hiland rolled to a 25-14, 25-7, 25-10 nonleague win over Holmes County rival West Holmes on Oct. 4.

Mallory Marmet (seven kills, five digs) and Lena Burgett (six assists) paced the Lady Knights.

New Philadelphia defeated West Holmes 25-14, 25-12, 25-17 in a nonconference clash on Oct. 2.

Marmet (14 kills), Camrie Wilson (17 assists) and Harper Warner (12 digs) led the Lady Knights.

Girls soccer

Hiland picked up a 5-2 win over Holmes County rival West Holmes on Oct. 7.

Charli Murphy and Becca Miller (assist) scored for the Lady Knights. Sydney Hawkins had an assist. Goalkeeper Landrie Croskey finished with eight saves.

Dover scored a goal with under a minute remaining in the second half to beat West Holmes 2-1 in OCC play on Oct. 2.

Breslyn Brown scored WH’s lone goal. Croskey recorded 11 saves.

Eighth grade football

Mansfield Senior defeated West Holmes 30-8 on Oct. 1.

Cameron Badger rushed for WH’s lone touchdown and converted a two-point run. Kaidence Thomas and Grantham Lovell played well for the defense.

Seventh grade football

West Holmes beat Mansfield Senior 34-30 on Oct. 1.

Zaylin McVay ran for four touchdowns to lead the Knights. Noble Mackey rushed for a touchdown, Christian Small had a two-point run and Carson Hawkins had a two-point catch from McVay.

Small had a fumble recovery on defense, with Kolston Wagers, Nick Crider and Drake Barnett making numerous plays in the Tygers’ offensive backfield.
