West Holmes BOE approves new hires, resignations and transfers

The West Holmes Local Schools Board of Education met Monday, Aug. 18 at West Holmes High School for a regular meeting.

The board did several things during the meeting:

—Approved the use of alternate transportation for special education or handicapped students when it is determined impractical to transport by regular routes and it is deemed necessary to transport by other means.

—Approved the appointment of board member Andrew Jones as delegate for the Ohio School Boards Association annual business meeting.

—Approved the updated sub pay rate changes for 2025-26, effective Aug. 1.

—Approved the wellness/success funding for 2025-26, outlining continued use of social workers, guidance counselors, school nurse and school resource officer services.

—Approved waiving instructional fees for all students for the 2025-26 school year. All students will have a $10 activity fee, and high school will have an additional $20 Class of 2026, 2027, 2028 and 2029 fee (replacing the prior class fee structure).

—Approved the enrollment of foreign exchange students into West Holmes High School for the 2025-26 school year pursuant to board policy JECBA.

—Granted authority to Superintendent Eric Jurkovic and/or Treasurer Jamie Mullet to sign any easement with the Ohio Department of Transportation with regard to the property on state Route 754.

—A resolution was given that the board will sell the elementary schools at a public auction once they are no longer in use and are ready for sale.

—Approved the following hirings: William Cox, custodian, effective Aug. 5; Katelyn Schwartz, middle school guidance counselor, pending graduation in December 2025; Bruce Murphy, bus mechanic, effective Aug. 11; and Katelyn Fraley, elementary music, pending passing of licensure test.

—Approved the following resignations: Mathan “Trevor” Miller, assistant girls tennis coach/head boys tennis coach, effective Aug. 1, and Cody Starr, paraprofessional, effective Aug. 8.

—Approved the following hiring: Joel Yoder, girls basketball volunteer coach and softball volunteer coach, pending background check.

—Approved the following transfers: Alan Swinehart, custodian, from Nashville Elementary to Millersburg Elementary, effective July 29, and Jacob Hendershot, custodian to custodian/groundskeeper, effective Aug. 1.

—Approved numerous teachers, nondegree teachers, classified workers and bus drivers as substitutes.

The next board meeting is scheduled for Sept. 15 at West Holmes High School.
