Volunteers honored at Wayne Dog Shelter and Adoption Center
April 20-26 was National Volunteer Week, and the Wayne County Dog Shelter and Adoption Center recently held an appreciation day to thank its volunteers.
Beyond the routine tasks of feeding, grooming and exercising the dogs, volunteers like Cherokee Adams and her mother Heidi Post become advocates and ambassadors, helping to find the perfect homes for shelter dogs.
“We love animals,” Post said. “I got Cherokee and a group of her friends tickets to the Bow Wow Ball fundraiser as a gift, and I registered to volunteer.”
After attending the fundraiser, the mother-daughter team decided to continue coming to the shelter and donating their time to serve the animals that come through the doors. This effort is helping Adams become one step closer to achieving her career goal.
“I love working with animals more than people,” she said. “Being able to come here and get the dogs out of their cages and give them some joy makes me happy. I plan on owning an animal sanctuary one day, and this experience helps me learn how to work with the animals.”
