On Monday, March 30, the Holmes County Commissioners approved a resolution of notice of award to J. Miller & Sons Excavating to contract for building demolition and site revitalization work through the county.

The bid, in the amount of $86,173, is an ongoing effort spearheaded by Holmes County Planning Commissioner Arnold Oliver to remove dilapidated and old homes that are an eyesore on the county.

The program is conducted through Ohio Regional Development Corporation on behalf of Holmes County, with the program stated as the Demolition and Site Revitalization Program.

Sealed bids were accepted by the commissioners, with Miller & Sons being tabbed to perform the demolition duties.

According to Oliver, overall, there are five properties involved in this portion of the demolition project, although only three of them are involved in the current Contract C portion of the program.

Oliver said two weeks ago when the original bid period was opened, there were no bidders for the project.

“They actually had a bid but forgot to show up,” Oliver said. “This needs to go pretty quickly because the first house we are taking down is in the village of Nashville, and the house is standing in the way of completing the Nashville water system.”

He said once that has been razed, the water system will be able to move forward toward completion.

The properties included in the Contract C portion of the job are located at 288 E. Millersburg Road in Nashville, 14106 state Route 226 near Lakeville and 102 N. Wood St. in Holmesville.
