The queen of hearts could be someone's best friend. The Scouters of Holmes County fundraising event is ongoing, with the pot to draw the queen now past $3,000.Submitted
The queen remains,
the pot continues to grow and Scouters of Holmes County continues to provide
entertainment while raising funds to help local Scouts.
There may be 52
playing cards in a deck of cards, but only the queen of hearts has the ability
to make someone a big winner, at least when it comes to supporting local
Scouts.
Kevin Mullet of
Scouters of Holmes County said the group was seeking a way to help raise money
for the Scout troops of Holmes County because there are often expenses
involved with Scouting that can create a financial burden on families,
especially those with multiple children in the organization.
The queen of hearts game came to mind, a game
he had seen previously, and he said it is a fun way to participate and support
the Scout troops.
“It’s super-fun and super-easy,” Mullet said.
“We believe that if this contest succeeds, it can take some of the
financial burden off our parents who have kids in Scouts. It has the potential
to truly fund Scouting’s future in Holmes County.”
Scouters of Holmes County is currently selling
$5 tickets in its progressive queen of hearts e-raffle, an online
raffle that has seen the pot continue to grow every week that the queen of
hearts is not drawn.
Mullet said the game is entirely online, and
those wishing to participate simply go online to play.
The projected jackpot now
stands at approximately $3,000, should the queen of hearts be drawn, so chances
remain for some lucky winner.
However, there is
one caveat.
Among the deck of
cards left is the joker, a mischievous card that, if drawn, resets the entire
deck, meaning all the drawn cards would go back into the deck and be
eligible to be drawn again, which can drive the pot even higher.
“Theoretically, we
could go through 51 cards and have the queen and the jokers left, and a joker
could get drawn, and it would reset everything, all 54 cards would go back into
play,” Mullet said. “However, the joker can only reset the deck one time.”
Whether a person enters and wins or not, the nice thing is all the
proceeds from this fundraiser will be poured right back into Scouting troops of Holmes County.
“When we support our kids through Scouting, we
are helping them learn so many character-building traits,” Mullet said. “Many
of the experiences Scouting offers may spark a young person to explore pursuing
a variety of jobs later in life. Plus, it gets kids out from in front of the TV
and off their phones and out into nature where they can build meaningful
relationships.”
The queen of hearts is a weekly drawing. If the queen of hearts card is not
selected, the jackpot carries over to the following week. However, to be
eligible for the next drawing, new tickets must be purchased for each weekly
drawing. Drawings are every Wednesday at 6 p.m. unless otherwise posted.
Tickets are $5, or if someone purchases five
tickets, they get a sixth one for free. The purchase of tickets is made online at www.goraisedough.com/buy/2360.
Once there,
players will find a virtual electronic
board with 54 playing cards from a standard deck plus two jokers,
which was created to begin the raffle game. Each card is randomly hidden behind
a numbered slot (1-54). Participants purchase raffle tickets and select a
slot number, hoping to reveal the queen of hearts.
Players can allow
the computer to randomly select a slot number or manually choose one by
unchecking the random select box.
One random raffle
ticket is drawn each week from all purchased entries. All other
tickets are discarded.
The winner’s
slot number is revealed on the board. If it’s the queen of
hearts, they win 50% of the jackpot, and the raffle ends. If it's another
card, that card and slot are removed from play, unless it’s a joker — then all
cards flip face down and shuffle, and the jackpot rolls over to the next week.
Prizes
for other cards drawn include $100 for the joker cards, $50 for aces and face cards, and $25 for all numbered cards.
"Thank you very much to everyone who participates for supporting Scouters of
Holmes County,” Mullet said. “We greatly appreciate everyone’s generosity.”
