The Holmes County District Public Library will offer several events and programs throughout March.File
March is packed with events and programs at the Holmes County District Public Library, offering something for all ages. From creative writing and story time to hands-on activities and discussions, the library provides numerous opportunities for the community to learn, create and connect.
Starting Monday, March 3, the library will kick off its Creative Writing Contest, inviting participants to submit original poetry or short stories, with or without illustrations. Prizes will be awarded to the top entries in each category, and submissions are due by Monday, April 28. Entry forms are available at the library, on the library’s website or by calling 330-674-5972.
A three-part American Sign Language class will be held at the Holmes County Central Library on Tuesdays at 6 p.m. on March 4, April 1 and May 6. Led by Jessica and Sharon from the Holmes County Board of Developmental Disabilities, the class will help participants expand their ASL vocabulary and communication skills. All ages are welcome, but registration is required.
Young children and their caregivers can engage in story time sessions at two locations. The East Branch Library will host story time Wednesdays at 10:30 a.m. on March 5, 12, 19 and 26 while the Holmes County Central Library will offer story time Fridays at 10:30 a.m. on March 7, 14, 21 and 28. Both sessions are designed for children age 2-5 and include stories, songs and interactive activities.
On Thursday, March 6 at 6 p.m., the Holmes County Central Library will recognize National Nutrition Month with a program led by OSU Extension Services educator Kate Shumaker. Participants will explore the role food plays in health and its ability to bring people together. Registration is required.
Following Friday story time sessions at the Holmes County Central Library, a Little Learners Playgroup will take place from 11 a.m. to noon on March 7, 14, 21 and 28. Open to children up to age 5 with an adult, the playgroup offers activities that encourage early reading skills and social interaction. Snacks will be provided.
Young readers will have an opportunity to build confidence in their reading abilities by participating in Paws to Read on Saturday, March 8 from 11 a.m. to noon at the Holmes County Central Library. Children can read to a certified therapy dog from Caring Therapy Canines.
For school-age children, After School Fun will be held Monday, March 17 from 4-5 p.m. at the Holmes County Central Library. Kids in kindergarten through sixth grade can participate in board games, crafts and other activities, with snacks provided.
Dinosaur fans will not want to miss Kids Craft Night on Tuesday, March 18 at 5:30 p.m. at the Holmes County Central Library. Participants will create a variety of dinosaur-themed crafts to take home. Registration is required.
A Family Movie Matinee will take place Saturday, March 22 at 1 p.m. at the Holmes County Central Library, featuring a showing of “Moana 2” (rated PG). Snacks will be available, and children must be accompanied by an adult.
A NERF Battle will be held Monday, March 24 with sessions at 1:30 p.m., 3:30 p.m. and 5:30 p.m. at the Holmes County Central Library. Open to children age 7-12, the event will feature various NERF game activities. Participants must bring their own blasters and darts labeled with their names. Safety glasses will be available to borrow. Permission slips and registration are required.
Adult book lovers can participate in a book discussion on Tuesday, March 25 at the Holmes County Central Library. The 1 p.m. session will discuss “Every Note Played” by Lisa Genova while the 6 p.m. session will explore “Sea of Tranquillity” by Emily St. John Mandel.
To wrap up the month, families can participate in a round of indoor mini-golf at the Holmes County Central Library on Thursday, March 27 from 1-6 p.m. The nine-hole course, inspired by children’s books, offers an interactive experience. Registration is required for designated tee-off times, with the first slot available at 1 p.m. and the last at 6 p.m.
