The Holmes County District Public Library has a full lineup of events and programs this April.
Aspiring writers are invited to participate in the library’s Creative Writing Contest, where they can submit original poetry or short stories, with or without illustrations. Submissions are due by Monday, April 28, and prizes will be awarded to the top entry in each category. Entry forms are available at the library, on the library’s website or by calling 330-674-5972.
The Holmes County Central Library will be closed from Monday, April 7 through Thursday, April 17 for carpet installation. During the closure the bookmobile will provide service in the library parking lot Monday through Friday from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. and Saturday from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. The East Branch Library will maintain regular hours, and Wi-Fi will remain available in the Holmes County Central Library parking lot. Digital materials can be accessed anytime through the Ohio Digital Library catalog at www.holmeslibrary.org.
Sign language classes will be held Tuesday, April 1 and Tuesday, May 6 at 5:30 p.m. at the Holmes County Central Library. Jessica and Sharon from the Holmes County Board of Developmental Disabilities will teach American Sign Language vocabulary and communication skills. All ages are welcome, but registration is required.
Story time at the East Branch Library will take place Wednesdays at 10:30 a.m. on April 2, 9, 16, 23 and 30. Children age 2-5, accompanied by an adult, are invited to enjoy stories and activities. Story time at the Holmes County Central Library will be held Fridays at 10:30 a.m. on April 4, 18 and 25, featuring stories, songs and rhymes.
The Little Learners Playgroup will meet at the Holmes County Central Library on Fridays from 11 a.m. to noon on April 4, 18 and 25. This playgroup is designed for children up to age 5 with an adult and includes activities to promote reading and social skills. Snacks will be provided.
On Saturday, April 5 from 11 a.m. to noon, children are invited to the Holmes County Central Library for Paws to Read, where they can practice reading to a certified therapy dog from Caring Therapy Canines.
After School Fun is scheduled for Monday, April 21 from 4-5 p.m. at the Holmes County Central Library. Kids in kindergarten through sixth grade can enjoy board games, crafts and other activities, with snacks provided.
Kids Craft Night will take place Tuesday, April 22 at 5:30 p.m. at the Holmes County Central Library. The theme is “Under the Sea,” and kids can create crafts such as jellyfish bowls, shark portholes and standing octopuses. Registration is required.
Adults are invited to a book discussion on Tuesday, April 29 at the Holmes County Central Library. “The Night We Lost Him” by Laura Dave will be discussed at 1 p.m., followed by a discussion of “The Backyard Bird Chronicles” by Amy Tan at 6 p.m.
