Hiland girls, boys soccer teams fall short in regional tournament play
Girls eliminated by Fairbanks in Division V final; boys edged in overtime heartbreaker to end impressive postseason run.
The Hiland girls soccer team’s season came to an end with a 4-0 loss to Fairbanks in the Division V regional final Nov. 1 at Pickerington North.
Hiland goalkeeper Kaitlyn Klink finished with seven saves.
“Hats off to Fairbanks; they were the much better team today,” Hiland coach Conner Lee said. “Proud of the girls and the season they had.”
Boys soccer
Hiland’s season came to an end with a 2-1 overtime loss to Fairbanks in a Div. V regional semifinal Oct. 29.
Christian Mullet scored the Hawks’ lone goal off an assist from Blake Stutzman. Goalkeeper Chase Coblentz recorded two saves.
“This was a painful one to drop in golden goal overtime,” Hiland coach Scott Bodiker said. “We didn't play particularly well the first half, and Fairbanks had the better of the play for sure. The second half we pressed more aggressively and felt like the aggressor and like we had some momentum heading into overtime. Unfortunately, it wasn't meant to be.
"We had a nine-game shutout streak entering the game, and it took two rockets from Fairbanks on the night to end that streak and the season. I'm super-proud of the guys. We left it all on the field. This group was bought in to what we were trying to accomplish, and everyone is disappointed that we were so close but not quite there for a final four berth.”
