Hiland boys soccer rolls past Smithville in 4-1 win
Noah Troyer scores twice as the Hawks notch their first victory of the season; girls soccer and golf teams also post strong showings.
The Hiland boys soccer team downed Smithville 4-1 on Aug. 19.
Noah Troyer scored twice and assisted on another goal to lead the Hawks. Christian Mullet and Blake Stutzman also scored for Hiland. Chase Coblentz recorded two saves in the net.
“Smithville is a very well-coached, disciplined team that is super-hard to play against,” Hiland coach Scott Bodiker said. “They make you earn everything you get, and beating them at their place is always a battle. We didn't play as well as I think we are capable of, but we did enough tonight, and we will take it early in the season.”
Hiland played River View to a season-opening 1-1 draw on Aug. 16.
Mullet scored for the Hawks off an assist by Roman Tkachuk. Coblentz finished with two saves in goal.
“I was extremely proud of our guys tonight,” Bodiker said. “River View is the defending state champion in Division IV and has an outstanding team again this year. We have gotten bullied a little bit physically in a couple of scrimmages, and we have been on our guys to raise their level both physically and mentally. Tonight, we were able to do that. That was maybe as intense of an opening game as we have had in all my 26 seasons at Hiland.”
Girls soccer
Hiland rolled to a 5-0 win over Northwestern on Aug. 19.
Minka Mullet led the Lady Hawks with two goals. Italee Mullet scored once and had an assist while Chanelle Kellogg and Ally Mullet scored once. Kaitlyn Klink finished with one save in goal.
“(It was a) good bounce back from the opening match,” Hiland coach Conner Lee said. “(Our) defense played well, and it was a great opportunity to get a lot of kids a lot of playing time.”
Hiland opened the season with a 3-1 loss to Stow on Aug. 15.
Kellogg scored the Lady Hawks’ lone goal off an assist from Zoe Miller. Klink recorded seven saves in the net.
“(We) had some moments throughout the game where we played really well,” Lee said. “(We) just need to string longer stretches together.”
