The Bowerston Community Women’s Club elected officers during its April 7 meeting.
Marie Harris was nominated for president and Debbie Carrothers for vice president. After brief discussion, both were unanimously elected and congratulated by the group.
Bowerston resident Genabea Chancey also attended the meeting and was nominated for club membership. She was unanimously approved and welcomed to the club.
During the regular business meeting, members reviewed plans for the upcoming soup and sandwich luncheon. The menu will include creamed chicken sandwiches, sloppy Joes, vegetable soup and cream of broccoli soup. Desserts and beverages also will be served.
The luncheon will be held at Trinity Church, 209 Main St. in Bowerston from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. for a freewill offering. Carryout will be available.
The group also discussed the upcoming Memorial Day celebration. Member Paula Beamer said the event should return to Gateway Park because of conditions at the community park. She said recent flooding and sewer line construction have made the park less suitable.
After discussion, the group agreed Gateway Park would be the best location. The club will ask the village to move several picnic tables there to help with seating and serving light refreshments.
This year, the club will provide snacks, cookies and beverages at the event but will not serve hot dogs as it has in the past. More details will be released after the May meeting.
Carrothers reported that veterans banners are ready to be hung and will be in place before Memorial Day. She also said two flower boxes on Jarvis Street will be planted when the five on Main Street are prepared for the summer season.
In new business, Carrothers suggested the group begin preparing for America’s 250th anniversary celebration.
Members discussed plans in neighboring communities and agreed many were not scheduling events July 4 because of conflicting activities.
Carrothers suggested a porch and home decorating contest with cash prizes. The group discussed judging, prizes and a timeline for entries.
More discussion will take place after the next meeting, scheduled for 6 p.m. May 5 at the Bowerston Library at 200 Main St.
