Black Bears rally past Redskins
Layton Massie and Maguire Werntz drove in sixth-inning runs May 11 to lift the Black Bears in a Muskingum Valley League game
The River View Black Bears used a late rally to knock off rival Coshocton 4-3 in a Muskingum Valley League showdown on May 11.
Trailing 3-2 entering the bottom of the sixth inning, the Bears came through with two clutch runs to regain the lead for good. Layton Massie tied the game with an RBI single before Maguire Werntz followed with a base hit that plated the go-ahead run.
Coshocton struck first with a run in the opening inning, but River View answered immediately with two runs in the bottom half to take a 2-1 lead. The Redskins regained the advantage in the fourth inning by scoring twice before the Bears mounted their decisive late comeback.
Reid Johnson paced the River View offense with a three-hit performance. Massie added two hits and drove in a pair of runs, while Blaze Klein contributed an RBI double.
Coshocton was led offensively by Dylan Wood, who collected two hits including a double and an RBI. Clayton Watson also added a pair of hits for the Redskins.
On the mound, Clark Frischen earned the victory by tossing two scoreless innings in relief. Frischen followed a strong outing from Brogan Shrimplin, who worked seven innings and struck out four.
