Neva Locker, longtime director of the Carroll-Tones in Carrollton, was the subject of a feature story in the Feb. 1, 1996, issue of The FPS.

The first big snowfall of the winter hit Carroll County, leaving 10 inches of snow in Carrollton.

Two Carroll County sheriff’s deputies were hospitalized with injuries when their cruiser crashed into a tree on state Route 39, 4.8 miles east of Carrollton. Admitted to the hospital were Frederick Hemming and John Pothorski, who were en route to Mechanicstown to assist Sheriff Dean Yeager and two FBI agents in searching for an Army deserter who had run into a wooded area.

A Purple Heart award for Pfc. Elwood "Skip" Davis Jr. — Carroll County’s first fatality of the Vietnam conflict — was presented at a ceremony held in the Carrollton Municipal Building with his parents and family members in attendance.

Tom Harp, who began his football coaching career at Carrollton High School, announced he is taking Jacque “Jock” Hetrick with him to Duke University, where Harp was named head grid mentor.

Dr. Glenn C. Dowell, who established his physician practice in Carrollton in 1928, received the 1975 Carrollton Jaycees’ Distinguished Service Award, while Malvern pastor, the Rev. David Martin, received the same honor from the Malvern Jaycees.

A new Welcome Wagon Club was formed in Carrollton when Mrs. James "Lex" Weyand was installed as president.

The Rev. John D. Schleicher resigned his Carrollton Lutheran pastorate to accept a co-pastorate in Detroit, Michigan.

Malvern Coach John Groff’s matmen rambled to their 18th straight win by handing the Vikings of Jewett-Scio a resounding 51-24 loss.

40 YEARS AGO

Employees of the Carroll County Highway Department voted to unionize.

Charles "Chuck" Pearson was elected chairman of the Carroll Soil and Water Conservation District.

Julie Davis and Eginhard Waldkrich, a West German exchange student, were crowned the 1986 winter sports queen and king at Sandy Valley High School.

Carrollton jumped back into the running for the Senate League title by bumping off Minerva 69-53 and shutting out Sandy Valley 75-49.

30 YEARS AGO

Federal Bureau of Investigation agents and county authorities were seeking two suspects in connection with the Jan. 30 robbery of the Sherrodsville branch of the Citizens State Bank.

Gary Palmer and Jim Long were elected president and vice president, respectively, of the Carroll County Agricultural Society or Fair Board.

Neva Locker, longtime director of the Carroll-Tones, was the subject of a feature story in the Feb. 1, 1996, issue of The FPS highlighting her career as a school music teacher, auction house clerk and friend.

Winning their first four matches, Carrollton’s wrestling team rolled to a 48-21 win over host Northwest.

Joseph E. Carlisle, a member of the Carrollton Board of Education, was elected president of the Buckeye Vocational School District’s Board of Education.

Markus Allison, a member of Malvern Boy Scout Troop 155, was named Outstanding Scout of the Year.

The Carrollton boys basketball team climbed to a 10-2 season record by defeating West Branch 42-39 and Marlington 75-55.

Dr. Mandal Haas was pictured with Jack Coffy promoting a new walking program — The Walk With a Doc — at Aultman Hospital in Carrollton.

Mark Wells, a former village councilman, was named the new village administrator.

Ali Poole and Kevin Merrick were honored as the leading scorers at the Carrollton-Salem boys basketball game.
