At World Crafts in Kidron, every single item for sale represents a story from blossoming artisans around the world, each providing rare beauty from one of three dozen countries where people are striving to make a living for themself, their families and even their communities.

On Thursday, Nov. 6 from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m., World Crafts will host its annual Christmas open house, which this year will coincide with its 35th anniversary at the Kidron store located at 13110 Emerson Road in Kidron.

“We’re excited to be able to share our story and the stories of all of our global artisans,” said Lisa Zuercher, store manager. “We will have in-store specials, refreshments and gift certificate giveaways, but best of all we will be able to share the amazing stories and products of our partners from all around the world.”

World Crafts isn’t just a retail store. With handmade products ranging from crafts and artwork to purses, clothing, wind chimes, a spa room, ornaments, bird houses, candles, coffee and tea, chocolate, jewelry, and many more items crafted by artisans from struggling nations around the world, it plays a role in preserving cultural heritage and promoting global connection through handmade art.

Today, mass production and consumerism can overshadow traditional craftsmanship. World Crafts is a reminder of the value of authenticity and human creativity by offering handmade goods from artisans around the world.

Zuercher said the joy within the walls of the store is present in every nook and cranny because the artisans are pursuing their passion and being paid a fair wage for their work.

“We cherish the opportunity to make it equitable for people to be employed and make a living all around the world and to experience having the satisfaction of creating something with their own hands that they are passionate about and can take pride and joy in making,” Zuercher said. “This is something that is life-changing and can make a difference in people’s lives.”

Michigan natives Tricia and Dirk Elliott enjoy making the trip to Amish Country several times a year, and World Crafts remains a favorite stop because they cherish the idea of supporting artisans around the world who are committed to creating beautiful work.

World Crafts maintains a strong commitment to fair trade, a concept that has been at the heart of the store for 35 years. The store ensures artisans are paid fairly for their work and that the materials used are ethically sourced.

This not only provides stable income for the many global craftspeople making a living in developing communities, but it also supports environmentally responsible practices because many of the artisans use either products from nature or recycled material to create their respective crafts.

The store’s atmosphere immediately captures the spirit of global craftsmanship, inviting customers to explore and appreciate the beauty of diverse cultures. By giving these artisans a platform, World Crafts strengthens local economies and encourages entrepreneurship based on skill and tradition. World Crafts is more than just a retail store; it’s a celebration of sustainability and fair trade.

The business partners directly with artisans, and many of the materials used are eco-friendly or recycled, and the store emphasizes ethical sourcing practices. By supporting World Crafts, customers contribute to preserving traditional crafts. This commitment brings meaning to every purchase.

“Fair trade is about treating these artisans with dignity and respect and helping them earn a fair amount for what they create,” Zuercher said. “Everything in our store is based on fair trade, so our artisans and farmers know they will be respected and earn a living wage. It gives them a global market for their products and has helped promote all the incredible art and products they are making.”

That makes World Crafts important, creating positive change and self-worth in communities and countries that need support.

“I think this store and the many people who support us demonstrates that shopping can be meaningful and purposeful,” Zuercher said. “The support provided through this effort is giving hope and renewing the spirit of the many artisans who are represented in our store.”

It invites people to explore the world through art and to value the humanity behind every handmade item. The store’s blend of beauty, authenticity and ethical purpose makes it a destination for anyone who appreciates global culture and the joy of creating something with one’s own hands.

Zuercher said the store is blessed to have many volunteers who share the vision of reaching out globally, and if anyone is interested in performing one of the variety of jobs at the store, they can call her at 330-857-0590 to explore the possibilities.

Stepping into World Crafts is like embarking on a journey that celebrates creativity, diversity and the shared artistry of humanity from around the world, and every purchase ensures one more step toward providing fair trade value to those who truly need and appreciate it.
