WayGo adjusts service hours for Wooster workers

Starting March 2, WayGo begins weekday service at 6 a.m. to accommodate first-shift employees in Wooster.

WayGo began weekday service at 6 a.m. starting March 2 to better accommodate first-shift workers in Wooster after ridership data showed increased demand for early morning transportation.

WayGo has officially updated its weekday service hours to align with the scheduling needs of Wooster’s largest employers. Starting March 2, WayGo Demand Response service now begins at 6 a.m., specifically to ensure that first-shift employees arrive at their workplaces before 7 a.m.

This change follows a comprehensive review of ridership data, which showed that the 7 a.m. hour has become one of WayGo’s busiest periods. Conversely, data indicated that the 7-8 p.m. hour was significantly underutilized. By reallocating these resources to the early morning, WayGo is now providing service when the community needs it most.

Prior to this change, many workers relying on WayGo were forced to seek special accommodations from their employers to arrive a few minutes late. The new 6 a.m. start time removes this hurdle, allowing for on-time clock-ins across the city.

"The data was clear: our riders needed to be at work earlier than our previous schedule allowed," said Kevin White, public transportation manager for the City of Wooster overseeing WayGo. "We saw a high volume of requests for early morning trips and very few for our final evening hour. By moving our start time up, we are helping employees stay on schedule and helping businesses maintain full productivity from the start of the first shift."

The change in service hours marks a major step in WayGo’s evolution from a general transit provider to a strategic partner in Wooster’s economic development. As the city grows, WayGo officials have said they will continue to monitor ridership patterns to ensure public transit remains a flexible, reliable resource for the local workforce.
