Statewide alert issued after ByHeart infant formula recall over botulism risk

Wayne County Health Department urges families to stop using all ByHeart formula products as Ohio reports suspected cases; caregivers should seek immediate medical care if infants show symptoms.

The Wayne County Health Department is warning caretakers to stop using ByHeart infant formula after a statewide recall linked to suspected botulism cases.

The Wayne County Health Department is urging caretakers of infants to discontinue use of all ByHeart infant formula products, as they have been recalled due to potential botulism, which can make infants very sick. Wayne County currently hasn't had any suspected cases; however, Ohio has had four suspected cases since Nov. 8.

Symptoms of botulism in infants include constipation, poor feeding, loss of head control, difficulty swallowing and a decrease in facial expressions. If it is believed an infant may be experiencing any of these symptoms and has ingested ByHeart formula, seek medical attention immediately. Botulism in infants can be fatal.
