Habitat for Humanity in Wayne County has been awarded a grant opportunity through participation in an aluminum recycling program that will begin in 2026 and continue as an ongoing way for the community to get involved. The effort operates under the campaign slogan, “Together, we CAN do more."
Through the aluminum can drive, Habitat for Humanity turns in receipts based on the amount of aluminum collected, allowing the organization to earn between $2,500 and $10,000 annually through the grant. Funds raised through the recycling program will be reinvested in Habitat’s mission of building affordable homes.
Several organizations and businesses are partnering in the initiative including Artiflex, Schaeffler, The College of Wooster, Beef O’Brady’s, Wayne Metropolitan Housing, the senior fair board and Seamen Corporation. Habitat also is working with the Wayne County Soil and Water Conservation District, which serves as an additional drop-off location. Aluminum cans may be dropped off at the Wayne Soil and Water office in the lower level of the county administration building.
Community members also can support the program by volunteering to crush cans by calling the ReStore at 330-264-4999.
In addition, Habitat for Humanity has been awarded a stretch of state Route 585 through the Ohio Department of Transportation’s Adopt-A-Highway program. The organization will maintain a 1.5-mile section of the highway just north of Habitat’s headquarters by picking up trash and will be able to collect aluminum cans from the route for recycling.
