“People constantly say how fabulous our downtown is,” said Mary Jo Kirven from Uptown Downtown Antiques & Consignments.
She added that the district offers a friendly, walkable shopping experience that rivals any large retailer.
“Count how many steps you take from when you park at Walmart to when you check out, and compare it to any downtown Wooster car-to-cash register steps,” she said.
At Fleet Feet, which specializes in running gear, manager Steven Kapes described steady momentum since opening.
“We’ve quadrupled the sales of the running gear store that was previously in our location, and this summer brought our three biggest months back-to-back-to-back,” he said. “Downtown is clean, safe and welcoming during business hours, and we’re grateful to be part of such a supportive community.”
Foot traffic is also on the rise for Books In Stock Used & Rare Books. The annual number of visitors has substantially increased since 2022.
“Parking isn’t a problem,” said owner Ben Stock. “If you have to drive half a block to find a space, that just proves that foot traffic is strong here.”
Olive Lane Oils & Vinegars owner Carly Styer said visitors often comment on how beautiful and vibrant downtown Wooster is.
“Out-of-towners tell us there’s so much to do here,” she said.
At Local Roots Market & Café, Executive Director Adam Schwieterman said, “Business is strong and our customers are loyal. We’re actively planning for expansion.”
Main Street Wooster Executive Director Shannon Waller said these conversations reflect a broader truth about downtowns everywhere: that they succeed through adaptability, collaboration and shared investment.
“Downtown Wooster is a reflection of the people who pour their energy and creativity into it every day,” Waller said. “We’re grateful to every business that has chosen to be part of this community — those who have grown here, those who continue to innovate and those whose next chapter takes them elsewhere.”
Waller added that Main Street Wooster remains committed to continuous improvement.
“We’re fortunate that the City of Wooster continues to beautify our downtown with planters, streetscape improvements and public art," Waller said. "Downtown Wooster is strong, resilient and always evolving. We’re proud of what’s been built here and even more excited about what’s still to come.”
