Winter sowing workshop set for Feb. 21 in Medina

OSU Extension Master Gardener Volunteers will host a hands-on seed-starting program

A hands-on winter sowing workshop on Feb. 21 in Medina will teach gardeners how to start seeds outdoors using simple, low-cost techniques.
The workshop will demonstrate winter sowing methods such as planting seeds in recycled containers like milk jugs and allowing them to germinate naturally outdoors through cold stratification.

Gardeners looking for an affordable, low-maintenance way to start seeds early can learn the basics of winter sowing during a hands-on workshop hosted by OSU Extension Master Gardener Volunteers on Saturday, Feb. 21.

The “Winter Sowing for Your Garden” workshop will be held from 10–11:30 a.m. at the OSU Extension Medina office, 4046 Medina Road. The program will introduce participants to winter sowing, a method of starting seeds outdoors during the colder months using recycled containers such as milk jugs, allowing nature to regulate temperature and moisture.

During the workshop, participants will learn how to prepare containers, select appropriate cold-season seeds, and properly manage soil and moisture. In addition, instructors will cover season extension techniques, including the use of cold frames and row covers, to help gardeners start earlier in the spring and protect crops from late cold snaps.

All materials will be provided, and attendees will leave with their own planted winter sowing containers along with practical knowledge they can apply at home. The workshop is designed for gardeners of all experience levels and emphasizes simple, low-cost techniques that can be used in home gardens.

The cost to attend is $15 per person. Registration and payment are due by Feb. 16. Checks should be made payable to OSU Extension and mailed or delivered to OSU Extension Medina County. Credit card payments are available by request through a payment link provided by the Extension office, though payments cannot be taken by phone or in person.
