Medina and Highland ready for playoffs

Medina’s boys basketball team is seeded ninth among 18 teams in Division I Northeast District 4, which includes teams from Northeast Ohio as well as Toledo and Findlay.

The Bees will open postseason play March 3 at 7 p.m. at No. 6 seed Elyria in what amounts to a district semifinal. The winner will play at 7 p.m. March 7 at Barberton against either No. 4 Canton McKinley or No. 10 Massillon Jackson in the district final, with the victor advancing to a regional semifinal at the University of Akron against the Northeast District 3 champion, potentially No. 1 seed Brunswick. Date and time are to be determined.

Highland is competing in the Northeast 5 Sectional/District as the No. 8 seed among 33 Division II teams in Northeast Ohio. The Hornets received a bye and will open at home in an 8 p.m. district semifinal March 3 against either No. 13 Stow or No. 22 Parma Normandy, which meet Feb. 26.

The winner will advance to the 3:30 p.m. district final March 7 at Wooster High School against either No. 10 Avon or No. 16 North Ridgeville. The district champion will face the Northeast District 6 winner, possibly No. 2 seed Massillon Washington, at the College of Wooster at a date and time to be determined.

In girls basketball, No. 19 seed Cloverleaf opened postseason play with a 61-19 win over No. 30 Ravenna to advance to a Division IV District 2 semifinal Feb. 24 at No. 9 Streetsboro. The winner will face either No. 4 West Branch or No. 21 Salem in the district final at 4 p.m. Feb. 28 at Lordstown. Evie Barth led Cloverleaf with 22 points in the win over Ravenna as the Colts improved to 18-5 after building a 35-6 halftime lead. Cloverleaf split its regular-season meetings with Streetsboro.

Highland, the No. 2 seed in Division II Northeast District 5, was set to host Westlake in a district semifinal Feb. 25. The winner will face either Youngstown Ursuline or Rocky River in the 7 p.m. district final Feb. 28 at Wooster. Highland advanced after Cleveland Garrett Morgan forfeited its first-round game.

In Division I, Medina was scheduled to open postseason play Feb. 25 at Berea-Midpark. The winner will play Saturday at Nordonia against either Parma Normandy or Cleveland John Hay.

Buckeye’s season ended Feb. 19 with a 46-40 loss at Hubbard in a Division IV District 5 game.
