The Medina community will gather later this month to honor the lives touched by cancer during the American Cancer Society Cancer Action Network’s Lights of Hope event.
The display will take place from 6 to 8 p.m. Friday, Sept. 26, at the Medina Gazebo on Public Square. The free event will feature music, light refreshments and a collective reflection before the Lights of Hope bags are illuminated at dusk.
“For me, Lights of Hope is deeply personal,” said Stephanie Mueller, an ACS CAN volunteer and Medina resident. “My dad is a prostate cancer survivor, and my father-in-law was taken too soon by colon cancer. Hosting this event in Medina is my way of honoring them — and everyone in our community touched by this disease. Each bag represents a story, a loved one, and a reminder that together we can push for change. I want people to leave this event feeling hope, connection, and the power of our voices united against cancer.”
Each decorated bag will serve as a tribute to survivors, caregivers and those lost to cancer. Attendees are encouraged to create personalized bags with names, messages or artwork. Funds raised through Lights of Hope will support ACS CAN’s advocacy efforts to make cancer a top priority for policymakers at every level of government.
The event comes as federal lawmakers debate proposed cuts to cancer research funding, including reductions to the National Cancer Institute and the National Institutes of Health. ACS CAN leaders say such cuts could threaten advancements in cancer prevention, early detection and treatment.
