The Mount Vernon golf team made it back to district play for the first time in almost 10 years.

The Yellow Jackets shot a season-low 303 to finish fourth in the Div. I sectional tournament Tuesday at Denison Golf Club. That was good enough to qualify them for district play for the first time since 2016.

Dublin Jerome won the sectional with an 11-under-par score of 273. Upper Arlington was next at 290, followed by Olentangy Liberty (295) and MV. The Jackets edged Olentangy by one shot for the final spot at Apple Valley on Oct. 7.

Senior Tyler Marsell had the best round of his career, shooting a 2-under-par 69. Marsell had one bogey and one birdie on the first nine the Jackets played – the back nine. He then birdied three of the first four holes on the front and came in at 33 on the front.

Sophomore Justus Shaw shot 38-39–77, followed closely behind by sophomore Grayson Workman (40-38–78) and senior Tyce Davidson (40-39–79). Senior Griffin Beach shot 84 (45-39).

Girls Golf

The Mount Vernon girls’ golf team finished 12th in the Div. I sectional tournament at Blacklick Woods on Sept. 30.

Senior Jadyn Row led the Jackets with a 106. Reese Hubbard shot 120, followed by Molly Emig (132), Bailey Vanderpool (144) and Grace Risser (153).

On Monday in the Div. II district tournament at The Links at Echo Springs, Centerburg senior Evie Stowe closed out her high school career with a 14th place finish as an individual.

Stowe, who had fired an 89 last week at Darby Creek in the sectionals to advance, shot 90 at the district tournament.

Centerburg volleyball

Centerburg inched closer to another Knox Morrow Athletic Conference title with a 25-6, 25-11, 25-12 victory over Mount Gilead on Sept. 25.

The Trojans (13-5 overall, 10-1 KMAC) were led by Jaelynn Caldwell, who had 10 aces and 27 assists. Jazmyn Larimore added 12 kills and six aces.
