The first time Beth Deering walked the property at Country Gatherings and Suites, she could feel the history oozing out of the place.

As a historian and medium, Deering knew she had to do something to help others feel that historical connection. So, she worked with owners Patty and Andrew McGough and they decided to host a family-friendly Civil War encampment and living history event.

Scarecrows & Soldiers will be held Saturday, Oct. 11, from noon to 5 p.m. at the AirBNB at 17720 Glen Road, Gambier. Admission is $10 per car and the event is presented by Behind the Seams Events.

The property was once the residence of Lander Durbin, who was a member of the 121st Ohio Volunteer Infantry that fought in the western theater during the Civil War. The event will include a Civil War encampment from the 8th Ohio Volunteer Infantry re-enactment group where guests can meet the soldiers and learn more about the Civil War and the life of a soldier.

“We’ve got to pay homage to Lander and his sacrifice. On Oct. 11, we’re having the first Scarecrows and Soldiers festival, featuring encampment, living history and focusing on basically, they were known as the scarecrow infantry because they were so thin,” Deering said. “Then, looking into how historically scarecrows played a significant role in farming industry, as well as the soldiers.”

Guests are invited to bring a homemade scarecrow to be judged for a chance to win a one-night stay for two at Country Gatherings.

There will also be an artisans row for handmade wares, ice cream from The Dairy, and members of the Columbus Muffins, a period authentic baseball team. Proceeds from the event will be donated to Legend Hills Orchard and Farm Market, which suffered a fire recently.

Deering plans to have an event dedicated to the legend of Sleepy Hollow sometime later in October.
