MV girls’ golf hosts first invitational, boys capture league win
Lady Jackets continue building program in inaugural season; boys’ team, KMAC rivals, and soccer squads notch strong showings

In its first year of existence as a full team, the Mount Vernon girls’ golf team hosted an invitational on Aug. 30 at Vernon View Golf Course. The Yellow Jackets finished
15th with a team score of 469.
Dublin Coffman won the event with a 325, followed closely
behind by Big Walnut at 328.
Freshman Reese Hubbard led the Jackets with a 109. Senior Jadyn
Row was close behind at 112, followed by Molly Emig at 118, Lillian Buckwalter
at 130 and Bailey Vanderpool at 136.
Big Walnut’s Gracyn Alexander won the individual title with
a one-under-par score of 71.
MV played a quad match at Granville on Sept. 1, finishing
fourth at 240. Granville shot 196 to win, followed by Utica at 229 and Licking
Heights at 236.
Row shot a 54 to lead the Jackets. Hubbard came in at 58,
followed by Buckwalter (62), Emig (66), Vanderpool (66) and Grace Risser (68).
The Lady Jackets followed that up with an eighth-place
finish in the Licking County League tournament at Granville on Sept 2.
MV shot 473 as a team. Granville won the event with a 335.
Hubbard again led the Jackets with a 113, followed closely
behind by Row (114). Emig carded a 117, Buckwalter a 129 and Vanderpool a 139.
On Sunday, Mount Vernon found its destination for the
Division I Sectional tournament. The Jackets will participate in the Blacklick
Woods sectional on Sept. 30. They will play with golfers from Delaware Hayes,
Pickerington Central and Watkins Memorial beginning at 9 a.m.
The top four teams and low scoring individuals not on a
qualifying team will qualify for district competition at The Links at Echo
Springs on Oct. 6.
Mount Vernon boys’ golf
The Mount Vernon boys’ golf team captured the third leg of
the Licking County League tournament on Monday, firing a 327 to win at The Virtues
Golf Club.
The Jackets easily beat runner-up Granville, which fired a
338. The victory helped the Jackets improve to 27-3 overall in the conference,
good enough for second place with one tournament to go.
Sophomore Kenton Strouse led the Jackets with a runner-up
finish as an individual with an 80. Tyler Marsell and Griffin Beach both
finished fifth at 82, while Tyce Davidson was eighth at 83. Justus Shaw fired
an 89 and Grayson Workman a 90.
The MV boys’ team will compete in the Division I Sectional
tournament at Denison on Tuesday, Sept. 30. They will tee off at 9 a.m. with
Olentangy, Licking Heights and Dublin Scioto. The top four teams and
individuals not on a qualifying team will advance to district tournament on
Oct. 7 at Apple Valley.
KMAC boys' golf
Northmor took control of the race for the Knox Morrow Athletic Conference golf crown by winning the second leg of the league tournaments.
The Knights shot 357 at Apple Valley to hold off East Knox, which was runner-up at 368. Centerburg finished third at 369 and Fredericktown was fifth at 404.
Northmor is currently at the top of the KMAC standings with a 19-2 record. East Knox is next at 17-4, followed by Centerburg (14-6) and Fredericktown (10-10).
The Bulldogs were led by A.J. Baxter and Beau Keller, who each shot 89. Trygg Waugh was next at 91, followed by Jeff Cook (99), Keegan Harris (105) and A.J. Salmons (122).
The Trojans got 88s from both Nick Meyers and Sam Lloyd. Vinny Morgan fired a 95 and Julian Meyers a 98.
Fredericktown was led by Thatcher Motter, who carded a 91. Cooper Lowe was next at 92, followed by Braxton Horlacher (102), Jolie Cooper (119) and Hunter Robertson (127).
Boys’ soccer
The Mount Vernon soccer team picked up a victory and a draw
in two games this week.
Despite dominating possession and shots on goals, the Yellow
Jackets (4-1-1) and Johnstown battled to a 1-1 draw on Sept. 3. The Jackets
outshot the Johnnies, 21-5, and had four corner kicks to none for Johnstown.
Parker Ward scored the goal for MV on an assist by Micah Jones.
MV goalkeeper Jackson Hite recorded one save.
Mount Vernon followed that up with a dominating 2-0 victory
over Ontario on Monday.
Jones scored both goals for the Jackets, which outshot
Ontario, 20-4.
Hite recorded three saves in goal for MV.
